Nobody wanted this waste of money, nobody asked for it, it will almost certainly not work properly if it’s ever finished and it will be too costly to operate it and too expensive to travel on. But the British public will end up subsidising it’s existence for decades to come and the only people who will benefit are the cronies who now have that 66 billion in their bank accounts.
If it has been built already, it wouldn’t have been hammered by inflation. The NIMBY energy was too strong. Not only did it delay things but it added tunnels and other works to placate it (which were then used by the people who insisted on them to claim the project was now too expensive).
Andy Burnham doing his usual honking about Manchester Airport paying a penny towards a huge transport link to its benefit (like Heathrow paid in part for Crossrail) didn’t help either.
It’s a huge shame, because it was always about increasing capacity so fast trains weren’t stuck behind stopping trains and so you could run many more of both.
£1000 per person for a slightly faster train line that the majority of us will never use. The government’s disregard for taxpayers’ money is the reason I stopped paying taxes.
The largest grift the country has seen.
They ney to do a cost vs inflation orginally predicted going forward
Just get it done. It’s an important piece of infrastructure being bastardised by bad governance, corruption, short term thinking and poor publicity.
If we don’t do this sort of thing we might as well admit we’re a stupid little island that can’t do what we need.
Spain did the same thing, but it was cheaper, longer and made quicker…. I wonder where all of the backhanders are going
Lots of disingenuous hs2philes in the chat, curiously devoid of answers when pressed
I thought it was already well into triple digit billions?
