Im trying to sell something and i have sold a few small things before and also bought with no problems. I usually ask for pick up and cash to avoid any problems with payment issues and sending stuff seems like a pain to me so i avoid it.

This time the person is asking for my WhatsApp number and i just want to see if this might lead to me being scammed or is this something people usually do?

  1. Probably yes
If it smells like scam it usually is a scam

  2. Nah, don’t give your number.
This is uncalled for and nobody needs your personal number to say when they will come pick it up.

  3. First red flag:
“würde abholen, komme aus Erfurt” > “meine Freundin holt ab, ich bin im Ausland.”

    Second red flag:
    “Let’s continue on WhatsApp.”

Can’t tell for sure if it’s a scam or not, maybe the person is just inexperienced, but not worth taking the risk. I’d stop the conversation there.

  4. Not that suspicious now. But that would depend on the next messages.
If they tell you to send them scans of your Personalausweis or similar things=> Scam
They send you a funny link with “Your item has been purchased, enter your bank details bla bla bla” => Scam
If they tell you to pay something in advance as a “verification for pick up” => Scam

Meet up in a public place, do not give them unnecessary information, get paid in cash. Simple rules that I follow and didn’t get scammed

  5. Most probably. If it looks like a fish and it smells like a fish….

  6. To me it looks like someone with “OK Zufriedenheit”. Not necessarily a scammer, but definitely a difficult person. Tell him that his girlfriend can message you via Kleinanzeigen to arrange the pick up, no need for WhatsApp. I’ve done the same when I picked something up my girlfriend found.

  7. Actually I dont think it is a scam, like most of the others here.
My logic is, that it is his ebay account and and since his girlfriend is picking the things up, she would like to text you without needing access to his account.

At least that was my first interpretation but I also belive in people beeing good.

And I wonder, what should be the scam? If she picks it up and pays cash, what should go wrong?

But if you dont want to give them your number, thats fair and they should find another solution.

  8. Hmmm… not necessarily, but smells fishy.

I sold something to someone in another town (couple hundred km) . They wanted shipping but coincidentally my wife went to that town for a business trip, so I offered them to pay without shipping and pick up the stuff at a hotel in said city. Bur since my wife was there for business it was unlikely that she herself would be available. So they had to trust me aand go to the hotel reception.
I was sure they assumed I am a scammer as well.

What I want to say, strange things happen in peoples lives, I would go ahead and just be carefull. They don’t need your phone number in advance, for what reason?

Everything can be sorted out in the Chat.

  9. As a general rule, if you have to ask if it’s a scam because you’re not sure, don’t trade with them.

It could be a harmless buyer, but it could also be a scammer. In my opinion, it depends on whether or not he accepts that you don’t want to give him your phone number.
