    Colonel Vadym Sukharevsky, the commander of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces, said the laser would be capable of downing aircraft at distances of more than 2km.

    “It really works; it really exists,” he said at the Europe Defence Industry conference,  adding that efforts are underway to scale up its capabilities.

    He mentioned Ukraine was only the fifth country to have a high-power laser weapon in its arsenal.

    In April, Grant Shapps, former British Defence Minister, said that the UK’s DragonFire laser could be used in Ukraine to counter Russian drones.

    He warned the advanced laser technology could have “huge ramifications” on the conflict, adding the military was rushing to get it into service by 2027.

    “It didn’t have to be 100% perfect in order for Ukrainians perhaps to get their hands on it,” Mr Shapps said at the time.

  6. I don’t know how many more times I’m going to say this but the Ukrainians are just the most incredible civilization of engineers.

    They likely pulled apart the UK laser, figured out what made it tick, then built a better version of their own.

  8. Yes the battlefield is the best place to refine and develop modern weapon systems

    Glad to see the UK still has a functional brain whilst the United States seems to have lost its somewhere along the way .

  11. I love this technology sooooo much. Because it’s purely a defensive tech. Like in military history or like in everything actualy (hacking, exploiting etc..) there is always an arms race between attackers and defenders. For a long time now attackers have had a huge advatage by spaming the technology that are missles and now drones. For example the Iron dome in Israel is cool yeah but what when a defensive misslw costs 100k and a decoy missle can cost a couple 5k from what I understand. Let’s not start talking about the nuclear dimension in all of this..

    But this tech. Has the potential to very cheaply destoy missles if it gets good enough (from what I understand). And it needs a lot of power and infrastructure around it so it can’t be like put onto a plane or a tank for offense. Even if it did a precies laser from a plane attacking enemies is great compared to the chaotic nature of missles. Countries like Russia attack civilians a lot of times and blame it on the missle missing. With a fucking pin point laser there is no excuses you were targeting for that civilian building..

    Btw when I am talking about the Iron dome I am not comending or commenting on poletics or actions of Israel just talking pure Military tech. (I was comenting on the poletics of Russia however)
