It’s really a resignation in name only, isn’t it? No one really has the seats to put another candidate forward.
Hear me out, what if we elected TDs, and then we got to elect the Taoiseach ourselves.
Why the rotating job?
I reckon it leads to weaker leadership because the first guy knows he has less time and the second guy has to keep an eye out for the election coming, and therefore will pander to the electorate in a bid to get reelected.

Technically, the shortest-serving Taoiseach, but he’ll leapfrog Garret Fitzgerald’s first term because he’ll be acting Taoiseach until a Government forms in January.
He currently has the least cumulative days as Taoiseach, but knowing Irish politics he’ll probably get a chance to bump those numbers up.
