Bulgaria expects winter tourism to grow by 5% this year, while resorts are preparing to host visitors from around the world.
Acting Tourism Minister Evtim Miloshev stressed the need for teamwork to ensure a successful season during a meeting with industry leaders at Borovets resort.
Resorts ready for action
According to a report by Novonite, Pamporovo and Bansko resorts opened on December 14th, while Borovets plans to open on December 21st, depending on the weather.
Sofia Airport expects over 9,000 flights and around 1.3 million tourists arriving in Bulgaria. To ease travel, the airport now offers free parking.
Borovets will have a deputy mayor focused on resort operations. A tourist information center will be moved to a new location to better assist visitors.
The Consumer Protection Commission and Regional Health Inspectorate will carry out inspections to ensure safety and high service standards.

Focus on sustainable tourism
Miloshev stressed the importance of sustainability, encouraging tourists to leave Bulgaria with good memories.
Authorities are focusing on meeting accommodation and food safety standards as part of this effort. In Borovets, the National Revenue Agency will deploy extra staff to tackle issues like improper billing and ensure professionalism.
Vasilia Konstantinova, Executive Director of Borosport, confirmed that the resort is ready. Ski pass discounts are available until December 15th, after which prices will rise by 10% due to changes in VAT rates.
Short-term visitors benefit from smoother travel
The growth in tourism aligns with the EU’s plan to introduce the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) in 2025.
Visitors from visa-exempt countries will need an ETIAS authorization for trips to Bulgaria and other Schengen countries, simplifying future travel.
For short-term visitors, improved resort infrastructure and services aim to make their stay smooth. The rising demand for skilled workers in tourism may create opportunities for migrants. With a focus on sustainability, these seasonal jobs could provide lasting employment.

Bulgaria aligns with EU standards
Bulgaria is taking steps to meet EU standards as it works toward joining the Schengen Area.
The inclusion of Romanian police officers at Borovets highlights cross-border cooperation and the EU’s focus on shared responsibility for immigration and security.
A season of opportunity
Bulgaria’s plans for the winter season focus on growth, quality, and sustainability. Visitors to its snow-covered mountains and resorts support a growing industry while enjoying a welcoming atmosphere.
This season provides both recreation and a chance to see Bulgaria’s potential as a year-round destination.
