TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The dynamics between Prince William and his father, King Charles III, have reportedly “shifted” amidst conversations on succession. The New York Post reported that as the oldest son of the 76-year-old monarch and the late Princess Diana, the Prince of Wales is unsurprisingly gearing up to take reins as a future king.

But King Charles and Prince William’s relationship has reportedly suffered some tension in recent months, palace sources told Us Weekly.

“The dynamics have shifted,” an insider told the outlet, with another adding that the sovereign “has wanted to be the monarch for decades.”

“Even though he’s battling cancer, he’s not letting that get in the way of his desire to be successful on the throne or a dynamic leader,” the source said.

There has been no comment from the British royal.

Behind the scenes, William, 42, is rumored to be preparing “for when his ascension happens.”

Deeming the topic of succession “sensitive,” the insider said that like his father, William takes “being a success in the royal role very seriously.”

“Sometimes there is tension,” the source said. He added that William is likely in talks about transitioning titles and responsibilities, as well as the current state of the UK government, to ensure “a smooth transition.”

Elsewhere, palace insiders claim that the royal staff began drawing up a succession plan after the king’s coronation in May 2023. The plan was fast-tracked earlier this year after Charles revealed his cancer diagnosis in February.

“For the most part, Charles is doing well,” the source said of the king. But there are still concerns that Charles’ reign is coming to an end.
