How the UK became ‘western capital’ for sharia courts. The number of sharia courts, also known as councils, in Britain has grown to 85 since the first began operating in the country in 1982.

  1. These need deleting right now. Deport whoever runs them

  2. Doesn’t replace our laws. Free people can agree to do what they want. This is fringe stuff.

Far more neo-sharia law groups in the States that are now bringing them into the mainstream.

  3. It’s not like they have any legal standing, so the whole thing is optional.

  4. If you’re angry about this then I don’t get what you want to do with it.

They aren’t legally binding, they are unofficial decision making type things in certain communities…… I’m sure I would dislike the people doing it like I do any fundamental religious types but it is what it is.

  5. Odd how the UK media never seem to get upset about the Jewish “Beth Din” courts that exist in many parts of the UK. These are based on a biblical injunction for communities to establish a Beth Din for the purpose of administering Jewish Law. Is it possible that there is some kind of hidden agenda behind the repeated focus on Sharia courts?

  6. I mean. Is it not just the same as getting the priest round for RC families?
If someone is so into their religion that they would go to these people and give that other person such power in their life, they won’t stop.

  7. Shouldn’t be any sharia law. Fuckin medieval bullshit.

  8. This should be illegal , if you did role reversal and any other religion, say Christianity was running this kind of thing , there would be uproar .

  9. Should be banned outright together with all religious based kangaroo courts.

  10. Every single one of them should be shut down immediately.

If people aren’t happy about it then the great thing is, they are absolutely free to leave the UK and go live in some Sharia land more suitable to their needs. No problem.

  11. England is done guys breaks my heart to see my country in this state.

  12. We have only one rule of law, full stop. We immigrate the people not the laws.

  13. These are not real courts.

They are basically arbitration panels to settle civil disputes

No different from other civil arbitration in the UK.

  14. “Sharia courts, also known as councils”

So they’re not in any way legally binding “courts”, as The Times is desperate to portray. Are there any other mediation councils for other religions? I know the Jewish community has the Beit Din which similarly mediates divorce and civil disputes according to Jewish Law – “weird” The Times hasn’t reported on that.

The issue of safeguarding and access to proper legal recourse requires actually working with different communities, not pushing discriminatory claims and misinformation which only serve to hide potential issues as people lose faith (pun intended) in the authorities and the obvious prejudice in this kind of reporting.

  15. I would like to see a Venn Diagram charting the set of people who self identify as free speech fundamentalists against the set of people who think arbitration should be outlawed if it doesn’t confirm to “British values.”
Theoretically there’d be no overlap, but after reading this thread I’m not sure.

  17. Get rid of sharia courts, get rid of CCP police stations. They have no right to be operating here!
