most real in college. usually people especially those living near the school have their friend circle formed in high school already. this aint america.
You mean acquaintance?
In Switzerland *all* newly met people after secondary education will be *Kollegen* or *Bekannte*, unless you marry a *Kollege* or a *Bekannter*, granting an upgrade to *meine Frau* or *mein Mann*…
The german Side of the friendship is a pathway to many abilities some are considered to be unnatural
They really are the opposite to PIIGS.
We have the same thing. You can be a “collega” (co-worker) or a “bekende/kennis” (aquaintance). These people are familliar, but not friends.
Are there cultures without that?
Indeed, we do too.
“several times”, heh. Best I can do is Kumpel.
Every country knows what an acquaintance is. This isn’t unique to Germany.
Freund/Freundin means either friend or boyfriend/girlfriend and that makes it awkward.
Imagine you are a male teenager and refer to your male friends as Freund, then everyone laughs at you because you sound gay so you don’t and instead call them Kollege/Kumpel/Bekannter.
A sentence like “Das ist mein Freund. Also ich meine natürlich nicht so sondern EIN Freund, ein freundschaftlicher Freund” could be a real sentence. Sounds silly no?
It is baffling that German never bothered creating a dedicated word for an unmarried significant other.
The list goes as followed:
-non existent: not important enough to even be considered
– enemies: people you somehow care enough about to hate them
– acquaintances: people you happen to know somehow and maybe see once or twice a year or less
-work pals: you like working with each other, maybe have a laugh and might share interests. Sometimes you make plans to go get a drink together, which will never happen unless it’s at work related events
– pals: you know each other but aren’t rly involved in each others Business. You might no a thing or two about one another and get along quite well, maybe share an interest. And sometimes even meet with other pals and friends to party or chill
-family and relatives: depending on what’s your circumstances this Ranges across the bord since after all you can choose who to be friends with but you can’t choose family
-friends: no matter how often you may see each other. Be it once a year or once a week or even more you will always kinda know what’s going down in their lifes not including but possibly up to being one of the few people to ever see them at their most destroyed and absolute Rock bottom, since you achieved a bond which allows you to talk freely about anything and everything. You get invited to birthdays, Weddings, important life Events. And generally are just there for each other. Such bonds are sometimes achieved by reeaaaaally being on the same side for almost everything in your life or having gone through certain sections of life together.
Feel free to add and adjust.
I have plenty of friends who I may not see in months and then we meet and enjoy beers together. Some of them I might have met less than 10 times.
In Denmark you have a window from late kindergarten to 4th grade to make your friends for the rest of your life.
To me they are different too.
Bekant & vän.
Digga digga digga
Always funny to see people with a bad english vocabulary to be totally amazed by german words.
“the germans have a word for..” yeah boy, you too
Only normal to have some bekanta around, you don’t instantly become best friends with someone because you hang out a few times.
Amateur. In Switzerland you can meet up on a daily basis with someone you know from primary school for 20 years straight and you’d classify him as a former schoolmate.
I was in the USA in the 90s for a few months and how quickly people befriended and trusted others there frightened me tbh.
Like somebody could say „they can influence grocery prices“ and I‘d be like „yeah, right…“ while Americans are like like „make that guy the president“. Reminds me of Thermians from the movie Galaxy Quest in some ways. Except Thermians could never have anybody deceptive in any way. Americans would worship Sarris instead. 😤
I personally have 3 levels of relations: znajomy – kolega/kumpel – przyjaciel. Although I would never admit someone is as much dear to me as a przyjaciel, so I usually still call them kumpel or ziomek
I have a lady friend for “casual encounters” I refer to her as ” Meine Bekannte”. It implies that it is nothing serious!
