Russian leader Vladimir Putin has proposed a technological experiment, saying that the West and Ukraine can decide on a target in Kyiv for a Russian Oreshnik missile strike and then try and intercept the Russian missile.

Details: Putin reiterated a propaganda claim that there is no way anyone can shoot down an Oreshnik missile. He also said that the missile has a range of up to 5,500 km.
According to Putin, even air defence systems deployed in Romania and Poland are not capable of intercepting an Oreshnik.
He said that if Western experts think that Oreshnik is an upgraded Soviet weapon, then they should “hold a high-tech duel between Russia and the West”.
Quote: “Let them select a target, let’s say in Kyiv, and focus all of their air defence forces there, and we will carry out an Oreshnik strike. And let’s see what happens. We’re ready for this experiment, but is the other side ready?”

Select an older military base near Kiev, one they don’t really need and can afford to lose.
However, the missile that Ukraine will use to shoot down the Oreshnik will hit the Kremlin *if* it cannot intercept it.

If that were the case you’d have targeted Zelensky with one at pretty much any public location he was in.
It’s the dumbest claim to make because now a single one stopped, or which fails, will make you look like a dumbass.
Putin wants to be more careful. If the weapon truly is unstoppable then intercepting it in the final seconds before impact isn’t how this works. So that now makes the launch site and command structure crucial targets, wherever and whoever they might be. It makes first strike by the West essential, and at some point the West will have to make the call whether Putin is bluffing, or actually about to give the order to fire a nuclear-capable missile on Kyiv.
This rhetoric from Putin is childish at best and highly dangerous at worst, and it won’t end how Putin thinks it will.
Russia likes to escalate, but where is that getting Russia? They’ve gone too far, there’s no more appeasement. Time to close the skies over Ukraine and strike Russia’s capability to attack beyond their borders.

Just target the launch area and manufacturing. Missiles seems like a bigger threat than they are and while useful they don’t impact a very large area for the money.
