INDEPENDENCE support would rise to 59% from 54% if it meant Scotland would be a republic, a new poll shows.
Support for independence was found to have risen to 54% when undecided voters are excluded earlier this month in poll commissioned by The Times following the Scottish Budget.
Campaign group Believe in Scotland (BiS) commissioned pollsters Norstat to ask the same panel if Scotland removing the King as head of state would affect how they would vote.
Support went from 54% in the same poll to 59%.
The poll shows independence support increased among those who voted SNP in the General Election by three points, should it mean ditching the monarchy.
With the republic caveat, independence support among Reform voters increased by two points, Tories by three, Labour by five, and LibDems by seven.
Founder of BiS Gordon MacIntyre-Kemp said: “That’s quite a jump and although roughly what my gut was telling me to expect, it’s also strange to see it confirmed after all these years of no polling on that issue. It throws up lots of questions, first being will this be repeated in future polls?
“Does this reflect the current generation of royals or will William becoming King, with his more media friendly Queen, change things?”
MacIntyre-Kemp also called for discussions on the role of the monarchy in the constitution of an independent Scotland to take place now.
He said: “It is one thing to say that a newly independent Scotland should be a republic and another to say that if the UK continues, it should become a republic.
“In other words, it would seem ridiculous to design a monarchy based form of government if you were writing the constitution for a newly independent nation in the modern world. Lots to discuss but one thing is for sure, we should begin those discussions now.”
Curious that it finds a rise in support across every single party’s supporters – I wouldn’t have expected the SNP and Tories’s supporters to have the exact same level of reaction to the idea!
The Republic of Scotland has a lovely ring to it.
But yes, fuck those parasites. Can’t believe in this day and age we entertain such nonsense privilege.
I would be careful about relying on 1 poll saying this especially as it’s such a surprising result. That said a poll showing 59% support is significant, how reliable is this pollster? If independence support is sustained above 50% across pollsters through this government’s term it will become untenable to deny a second referendum and the spectre of prime minister Farage will likely push Scotland over the line and achieve independence.
Who tf are they polling? There’s hardly billions of people in the country, surely everyone gets a turn to be asked at some point in time, or do they keep going back to the same group of people every time?
I always thought Alex and Nicola were making a big mistake by not going for an independent republic. They definitely messed up on that one.
Can’t quite square how you change from supporting a Union with monarchy to an independent Scotland if there was no monarchy.
Wouldn’t have thought the chance to get shot of the thieving parasites would make you change – but there you go!
The Monarchy does nothing for us but hoard land and keep it barren for their grouse shooting shit.
Their occasional philanthropic escapades are nothing but a shield against critique, they could easily put billions of £ into services and charities that help the poorest and not notice a single thing, but they dont.
I’m republican as they came, but we need two votes on these separate items. Conflating the two risks alienating people who want one and not the other- presumably there are some people who want independence with a monarchy and (a great) many more who want to remain in the UK without a family of nonces and parasites as monarchs.
Wow. Not what I expected, but if that’s what the people want!
Oh is DarkStarryNight on holiday?
Cool, wonder who the first president wold be be, just as long as it’s not a politician.
Wow, I would’ve expected a commonwealth keeping the monarchy to be the more generally acceptable middle ground, and would be overall more popular.
I am pro indy, anti monarchy, but to be honest, they are two seperate votes. I would imagine there would be another referendum on the monarchy during the initial period after the indyref vote. Would be unfair to go straight to a republic in the same vote, even if that’s probably what the people want and what I want.
