19th December 2024 – (Helsinki) inland’s Ministry of Defence unveiled a robust defence budget of 6.5 billion euros for the upcoming year, reflecting a notable increase of 536 million euros from the current fiscal year. The budget for 2025 highlights a strategic focus on fortifying national defence capabilities and furthering Finland’s alignment with NATO objectives, with defence expenditure projected to encompass roughly 2.5 per cent of the nation’s GDP.
Within this allocation, 2.5 billion euros are earmarked for military operations, encompassing essential areas such as personnel remuneration, conscription training, and equipment upkeep. Moreover, a substantial portion of 202 million euros has been set aside for aircraft procurement and various defence resources over the ensuing five-year period.
A significant portion of the budget, amounting to 1.5 billion euros, is dedicated to the acquisition of new defence assets, while an additional 431 million euros will be channelled towards enduring enhancements in military systems.
Noteworthy provisions include 158 million euros allocated for expenses linked to Finland’s NATO membership, encompassing investments aimed at bolstering NATO’s presence in the country, reinforcing interoperability, and enhancing troop reception capabilities. Since officially joining NATO as its 31st member state in April 2023, Finland has continued to deepen its collaboration within the alliance, as evidenced by the approval of the Multi Corps Land Component Command and the deployment of Forward Land Forces during NATO’s summit in July this year.
