SPENCER (KTIV) – Just outside of Spencer, Iowa sits Heartland Pet Resort, a business that is hard to miss this time of year.
“We do boarding, grooming, dog watch, underground fences, training, pretty much everything for your pets need,” explains Miranda Shannon, owner of Heartland Pet Resort.
Every night at 5 o’clock the property transforms from a pet boarding and grooming center to a winter wonderland.
“I’ve always loved Christmas lights, so when we bought this in 2017, I had to put up some lights just for the kids to have fun and for me to enjoy it,” Shannon reminisced. “And I really wanted our customers to be able to enjoy coming out here, because you know, winter is not fun in Iowa.”
Bringing the display to life is a labor of love that begins in early October and continues all the way through opening day Thanksgiving weekend. But, when said and done, it is all worth it.
“I just love seeing the look on the kids’ faces, and people of all ages,” explains Shannon.
And everyone is welcome.
“You can just pull into the parking lot and walk around. We have kind of grown it every year, and now what we have is this huge display over a couple acres that we have three different paths,” says Shannon. “You can walk around the path that is around the house, a nice little wooded area that is through our grove.”
And, of course, the crowd favorite light maze really sets the Heartland Light Display apart.
As the display continues to grow with every season, a visit has become a holiday tradition fir many families.
“We have so many people say, ‘we’ve been here year after year, after year and we absolutely love it,” Shannon says with a smile.
The display is open daily from 5 to 10 PM through January 5th. It is free to attend, but donations are appreciated.
