James Gunn was against Superman wearing trunks until David Corenswet said something that completely changed his mind: “He wants kids to not be afraid of him. He wants to be a symbol of hope and positivity”

How Superman actor David Corenswet convinced James Gunn to go with trunks on the Man of Steel’s costume for the new movie

  1. I do like the other costumes they looked cool, but When people describe Superman they say cape red trunks and S symbol on his chest, a staple accessory to the uniform. Also another piece of clothing a kid can wear to pretend to be Superman aside from the cape. It just works.

  2. To save a click (and I’m paraphrasing below):

Zack Snyder called the trunks antiquated and said they didn’t look “cool”, Gunn also had issues incorporating the red trunks for a while, but the new Supe David said “It would help kids not be afraid of him, because it’s less threatening”.

  3. The trunks are lame, not a major thing but they are lame

  4. I still think the trunks look stupid and are a relic of a bygone era, but it’s ultimately trivial

  5. I mean, based on the set pictures there is a reason why there aren’t full frontal shots in the trailer… They’re probably still busy hiding the bulge in post. These trunks are not formfitting enough to not outline his whole dick!

  6. Well whatever excuse you can come up with. If you think kids are occupied about him wearing trunks or not when he can literally fly and lift buildings, you really have no idea what kids care about. You could dress as a hobo if you wanted to and if you can fly and do cool stuff and children would be generally open to you as long as you aren’t a complete dick, which superman isn’t anyway. a super strong superhero that can fly is pretty cool to kids, trunks or not.

    the mental gymnastics. lol

  7. It makes sense aesthetically too, the red breaks up all that blue, caville’s body gets lost in all that dark blue and shadows from the cape

  8. Lot of people keep thinking the trunks mean something but it’s just what circus strongmen wore when Superman was first written so it was an obvious visual shorthand for how powerful he is. They’re not really needed.

  9. It’s visually necessary to break up his costume with a line of color around the middle and it needs to be wider than a belt. It looks even goofier just to have him in all blue pants.

  10. Underwear is a symbol of hope? And Hollywood wonders why it’s losing…

  11. “So imagine, you’re Superman and you wear your drawers on the outside…”
