Russian state-controlled news channel RT removed from Irish screens

  1. It was a weird one to watch…it had some genuinely interesting documentaries but when they turned on the propaganda it was so obvious, so unsubtle that you felt like you were being beaten over the head with it. They had some lad doing their version of The Daily Show and he was so sincere in his bullshit and so detracted from reality it was like watching a satire of satire.

  2. The documentary channel had some good stuff. The news channel was shite like all the others.

They’ve even blocked the RT Documentary channel on YouTube which is very annoying.

  3. I’d like to think I can judge for myself whether or not I should be able to watch that TV channel. Fox News was never banned

  4. Use to have RT on Facebook a few years ago, the clips showing the Russian military equipment, there was never any dialogue just the tanks or planes in action. Must have been some Russian war going on at the time, my feed was swamped with RT propaganda shit so deleted it

  5. We really need US style constitutional free speech protections.

Yes, RT is propagandistic bullshit – just like all of the other news channels – but some European countries are now _threatening to imprison people_ for what they say about the war in Ukraine.

  6. I don’t think it should be banned. I know I love frequenting far right discords, and was on Parler a good bit too following all the loons. It doesn’t mean I agree with anything I see.

People should make up their own minds what to watch and if you can’t separate news from propaganda then that’s your problem.

  7. I have to disagree. We should call out misinformation when it exists. But trust the public with the information.

Hiding information is a bad thing

  8. I’m watching

Nhk news anyway, great japanese news channel with good documentaries

I related to the above topic but sure look

  9. Propaganda is a very slippery thing though, if like me, you have seen 50 years of films, newspaper articles, news reports, where the Russians are always portrayed as bad people, you can’t help but be affected.

  10. And Rupert Murdoch’s channels stay

Obviously this war is disgusting and another example that humanity is inherently trash. However, all this virtue signaling now is hard for me to swallow. It’s great but things like this and all these global companies pulling out of Russia, now it’s trendy and gets them a share on IG.

Can’t help but be pessimistic. Just focus on what’s happening in Ukraine. All this shite is just noise.

  11. Russia has invaded a European country and likely has plans to invade more (Transnistris in Moldova, maybe even Georgia). It has also threatened the world with nuclear weapons and has even shelled a nuclear power station in Ukraine causing fires. In its public statements it has proven itself to be living in an alternate reality.

But the real problem is it’s state Media’s freedom of speech lmao. If you think for a second RT isn’t s complete mouth piece for the Russian government you’re a moron.

  12. I don’t agree with this. the censorship of media is wrong no matter the context. When you allow OAN or fox who openly call for bombing the middle east and assassinating foreign government ministers and justifying illegal wars. People cheering on this type of censorship are being short sighted. Yeah RT has some propaganda pieces but so do a lot of networks. Where were the calls to ban the BBC when they justified the murder during the troubles? where were the calls to ban CNN/Fox/BBC for justifying the illegal war in iraq and afghanistan? if we can’t have an open view when it comes to analysing information for ourselves then we’re further away from getting all the info and trying to bridge the divide towards peaceful de-escalation

  13. It might have been a propaganda outlet, but they produced some damn good journalism sometimes. They host intellectuals and journalists who the US media won’t even touch because of their criticism of western imperialism.

People like Chomsky and Chris Hedges for example (the latter of whom actually had a show with them for a while).

  14. Take in all the information you can from as many different viewpoints as possible, as long as you are aware who funds the sources. This is the best way to get some sort of understanding of any issue. The less sources available the harder it is to get to the core of a story.
    Balance is everything.
Banning of information is always bad. It is disheartening to see the amount of cheerleading censorship gets these days.

I personally want to occasionally hear the type of propaganda the Russian state produce. It is interesting and gives me insights into what the average Russian must be viewing on a daily basis. It gives me a better understanding of Russia. I also like to occasionally watch Fox News or sky news. They are all incredibly biased but help me to understand the type of people who only watch those channels.
