WisDOT technology helps holiday travelers get to destinations safely

As people dig out from the first big snow of the season, thousands of Wisconsinites now have their eyes on holiday travel.

This weekend, AAA predicts over 119 million people will hit the road, traveling more than 50 miles from home to celebrate the holidays. Knowing that, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation is reminding drivers their 511 app and website can help plan a safe trip.”We see our app use and the hits on our 511 website increase dramatically during winter, especially during winter storms,” said Elizabeth Schneider, freeway operations engineer for WisDOT. With 500 cameras across Wisconsin, the Department of Transportation’s 511 map allows travelers to track their route in real-time. WisDOT recently added live cameras, which give a bird’s-eye view of traffic backups and snow-covered roads.”We have conditions that include normal, partially covered roadway, fully covered roadway, and driving not advised,” Schneider said. “Then sometimes, we don’t have any information, so there’s a color code for that, too.”On the 511 map, green roads mean conditions are normal. Blue indicates up to 50% of the road is covered by blowing snow, ice, or a slushy mix. Pink means up to 100% of the road is covered with snow or ice. If you spot a road colored black, that means conditions are so bad, that travel is not advised.”That information, we often get from the field, from the counties or from observers and law enforcement on the roadway,” Schneider said.To download the 511 app to your smartphone or tablet, click here.
