I see similar tactics when I go to the grocery store and such. Just yesterday, a checker commented to me that if I didn’t buy more eggs, my bread would be more expensive. I recently got a flock of chickens, so I stopped buying eggs, but I don’t want more expensive bread, so I just bought two cartons. I now have 36 eggs in my refrigerator.
Good business.
What an asshole. You don’t go around bullying your allies, and this completely undermines free market principals. This is bad policy, bad economics, and just plain stupid. The next 4 years can’t go by fast enough.
No it’s a terrible way to do business especially as the US quite simply cannot compete with the nations the EU is currently buying from. The EU is more likely to just stop doing business with the US entirely than it is to make up a $132 billion trade deficit with oil and gas purchases.
To put that number in perspective, the US’s total oil and gas exports for 2022 were $118 billion. So the EU would have to buy more oil and gas from the US *every year* than the entire planet did in 2022. That’s not going to happen.
It is pretty easy to understand why any country would try to steer away from doing Business with a partner such as the US; unreliable, unpredictable…
Even the US does not have refining capabilities for its own shale oil because it’s dirty. This is the reason US imports Canadian oil. Don’t know if EU has those refineries
These posts are more entertaining now that he’s Vice President elect Trump.
The repercussions of this spray tanned meat bag will wreck the US for decades.
Republicans hate America.
What always happens is if things get more expensive, people look for an alternative. The supply chain for the alternative gets better the alternative gets cheaper as they know they have customers so can sell all they can. Often the original seller never gets those buyers back.
I’m doing this from memory and probably have some things wrong, but IIRC, we used to get a lot of grapes from Mexico. I don’t remember if it was a boycott, or bad season or two, but we started importing grapes from South America. The supply chain to get South American grapes was established and many buyers never went back.
If we squeeze Europe to buy American oil, it makes them go elsewhere. A few pipelines get built and those countries get the deals.
It isn’t a good way of doing business, but it’s a good way of consolidating his base who buy into American exceptionalism. His voters are jizzing in their pants when they see Trump twisting someone’s arm.
In the end the empire cannibalises its vassals. The vassals will seethe but they can’t envision any other reality.
Good luck to you Donald, when the EU starts ignoring your lead as an ally and your skewed interests, and begins looking for other less bullying trading partners.
The EU needs to step away from this toxic trading relation with the US – we are not your vassals.
Take your military bases, soldiers and nukes from EU soil and fuck off.
This dude legit cannot stop being an idiot for even five minutes.
Well the US already blew up a underwater gas pipeline to force Europe to buy US liquid gas shipped across the world.
He’s not trying to strong arm them into buying more gas. He’s trying to make up an emergency to justify a tariff on goods coming in from Europe. He ultimately wants to replace income taxes with tariffs without having to go through Congress. This was never about trade. It was about transferring the tax burden to regular folks.
He’s done the same thing with China, Mexico, and Canada because they’re some of our largest trade partners. He’s also thrown around one for BRICS countries. You can expect to keep seeing him doing this over and over again.
It doesn’t matter.
The oil & gas producers in America have already said they’re pumping all they’re gonna pump. They’re not going to increase production because doing so would decrease prices.
This is either posturing, senility or more likely both.
We elected a senile fool to run our country. Buckle up folks, it’s gonna be *rough.*
I watched a macron interview post ukraine war and since europe couldn’t buy russian they actually tried american but he complained biden was trying to profit from them.at this stage when they needed help.
In 2018 trump often attacked germany for nordstream and attacked nato for letting germany and russia do that and he did pass tarrifs against russia.
But weirdly netherlands prime minister did say in 2022 that trump was right.
To be very honest trump is just obsolete I don’t think he can even passs his policies.
Post midterm it will be a mess.
Obama deported more migrants.
Obama to an extent had better economy and atleast tried to do something with healthcare policies.
Obama , clinton and to be fair bush sr are the only presidents post nixon who tried something to change .
I mean….it’s better than blowing up their cheap gas pipeline. Still an A-hole though.
Trump is just a fucking moron, he has no idea how any of this works and is just in it to enrich himself and those closest to him. It’s safe to say that any economic “idea” he has can be safely discarded as worthless and harmful
It’s better than buying them from Russia and getting a surprise invasion because your economy is dependent on a hostile foreign power and you can’t resist it. Realistically that’s the alternative than buying from the US.
The truth is there’s only so many LNG export facilities and the US and EU will probably use all the ones that are available.
I’m not sure I understand the purpose of this. If the US sells more oil and gas to the EU, then it will be selling less oil and gas to countries outside the EU. It’s not like oil and gas in the US are sitting around unsold.
If he keeps walking around the room with a baseball bat this isn’t going to work out well. Maybe all the other countries will create a new FTA that leaves out the states. They can go other places for their goods
This is ridiculous on so many levels
Better than buying Russian oil refined in India.
Yeah that’ll show everyone that we mean business. We’re going to tax ourselves into oblivion.
It’s a good way to create economic gridlock.
Prepare for 4 more years of that kind of bullshit! It’s 2016 all over again but on steroids!
Europe needs to open its eyes about America and start to cut those ties that bind us. 40 years of unrelenting military aggression and intervention (led primarily by the US) on our South Eastern borders has seen a terrible return for Europe.
Just waves and waves of massive humanitarian displacement and catastrophes, regime-change after regime-change, terror and it’s counter-terror flipside, political chaos, rising bigotry and hate. Now we see ISIS appointed – by the West – to control Syria. It’s fucking miserable.
It’s terrible. President Musk should really review this guy’s public posts carefully.
Let the man cook. Majority of voters want this so give them what they want
Explain to me how the EU selling to the US is THEIR deficit.
We are in the post-truth, post-logic era.
the price of luxury italian and french goods are about to go way up
Yes, everyone loves getting unprovoked threats and agreeing to them. Especially on Twitter, the new communication medium of high level politicians.
Unfortunately none of the oil companies pay any taxes so none of this money will come back to the government either way.
Does just throw around the word tariff and think he’s smart?
America, you are about to get what you asked for.
It’s a good way of encouraging me to make sure I buy a european-built electric vehicle next year. Was thinking about a Tesla but given that the US government is threatening me: no way.
This is bullshit because we already increased our exports to Europe after the Russian sanctions.
Trump wants to take credit for what Biden already did. Nothing new.
US has stepped in a filled the gap for Europe, and one of the (many) reasons Russians economy is in the shitter under Biden.
What are the governments in the EU going to do, order their citizens to buy more gas? And then also order the oil companies where they must buy their oil from?
If that’s the way it works, why doesn’t he just order the US citizens to buy less? And order US companies to manufacture domestically rather than import?
They are all doing it to us now. Why are people freaking out?
Gish, And I thought GOP was all for laissez faire capitalism and the beauty and genius of free markets.
I don’t get why Trump speaks as if the U.S. government sells oil and gas. They don’t. He’s using the presidency to insist that our allies by products from private for profit corporations?
Ridiculous statement. Gee we can buy it from the United States or Russia and related I think we’ll buy it from the United States
Then he can take credit for it
Great , let’s sell our cheap domestic oil over seas making huge profits for Big Oil and reducing domestic supply and keeping gas prices up. You know when gas was cheap when there was still a law prohibiting US oil from being sold off shore

The US once again is absolutely full of shit. Less than a year ago, Biden blocked approvals for LNG exports to Europe. In less than a year, the US’s policy went from don’t buy from us to buy from us or else.
