It’s heading for a white Christmas across almost the entire country.

Christmas should be white across most of the country, according to a meteorologist at the Icelandic Meteorological Office. On St Thorlak’s Mass gales or storms are forecast, and on Christmas Eve there could be considerable snow in the south and west of the country.

Björn Sævar Einarsson, a meteorologist at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, says in an interview with mbl.is that the weather outlook is good for this weekend.

“There will be frost here and there in the country and cold weather on Sunday where the frost could reach double digits,” he says.

Snowfall in fairly strong winds in the afternoon on Christmas Eve

Einarsson says that on Christmas Eve, a warm low will come up to the country and will pass quickly. It will be accompanied by gales from the southeast or a storm from the southwest with rain or sleet and temperatures from 2 to 7 degrees. According to Einarsson, the wind will turn southwest before noon with showers and later gales and then gusty winds for a while in the northwest of the country, and could become a storm there around noon.

“On Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day, there will be southwest winds with gales in the south and west of Iceland but mostly clear in the north and east.”

He says that there could be considerable snowfall in the afternoon on Christmas Eve with rather strong winds from the south and west, which could cause problems for drivers as it could become blinding.

“It will be a white Christmas in most places. I think we can agree on that,” Einarsson concludes.
