The most German thing I’ve ever seen: get a physical card to show your digital proof of vaccination

  1. I have one of those. I need to show my ID (a physical card) anyway, so this means i don’t have to take out my cell phone, unlock the display and open the app, while I’m most likely still wearing gloves.

  2. I have one of these, and as i need to show ID anyway, so i keep them both stacked in my wallet.
It’s much faster and more efficient than trying to get my ID out of the wallet, put it back to free a hand for my phone, show both and return it again.
So in that sense, yes, it is very German. Its efficient AF.

  3. Yes, this is a thing, and there is an excellent reason for it.

First, not everybody has a smartphone. The only other alternatives would be either the yellow vaccine booklet or the paper certificate with the QR code on it; but these can easily become dog-eared, crumpled and torn, and are also in an inconvenient format. A plastic pass in standard credit-card format will easily fit in any wallet.

Second, it’s useful to have a backup even if you do have a smartphone. You might drop your phone and crack the screen so badly the QR code can’t be scanned from it, or the battery might go flat, or the entire phone might simply brick. Since the QR code is only stored on the phone and not uploaded anywhere (for various data security reasons), you can’t simply borrow somebody else’s phone and use it to sign into your account — because no such account even exists.

And if you’re like my wife, you regularly forget to take your phone with you, leading to embarrassing situations in restaurants and hair salons (this has happened three times so far).

  4. If you consider providing a non digital solution to elderly people without a smartphone a „German Thing“ 🤷🏼‍♀️.

  5. This is very helpful actually..

I don’t want to carry all the papers etc and my phone being charged all the time for showing Impfnachweis is annoying as to be honest.

The most German thing is that last week a cashier in Rossmann doesn’t want to scan my € 5 coupon barcode because it’s “only a picture from phone gallery”.

Or Ausländeramt need me to sent a signed physical letter that I am the one that submit and upload my data online for the process. No, you can’t bring it during the fingerprint scanning. Thus, the online system is reducing 2 trips (1. scan + documents drop and 2. pick up) into 3 trips (1. Dropping letter, 2. Scan, 3. Pick up).

What you post isn’t. It’s not a requirement. It’s called an option.

  7. That’s what QR codes where invented for, to be printed. The price tag on it is steep but I think you get more than one and it’s more durable than a piece of paper and not everyone has a printer and other utensils to create it.

  8. Print the QR-Code yourself, laminate it and put it in your wallet. It does the same thing. A friend does this ever since. No one but me gave him stupid comments so far.

  9. As entertaining as the peculiar joke is, we gotta be honest: not everyone has a smartphone and if your phone dies, the battery dies, or get stolen, you would wish having one of these physical cards in your pocket.

I will definitely get one 🙂

  10. The “digitalness” of the certificate is not so much the fact that you can store it on your phone but that the data in the QR code is digitally signed.

Whether that QR code shows on a screen of your phone or on a piece of paper or card doesn’t matter.

The QR code on the paper you get to scan for your phone is already a valid certificate by itself. Putting it into your phone is just a convenience for you.

  11. I actually were on the edge of not going to the cinema

My battery ran out just moments before the covid check. Luckily somebody from the staff was kind enough to lend me his charger.

  12. It is for older people that don’t understand #Neuland.
The most German thing about it is the price. 10€ for piece of plastic with ink on it. Honestly, you get the qr code from your doctor. If I had to pay 10€for it, I would clue it on a piece of cardboard and call it a day.

  13. My dad has one of these.
He is very bad when it comes to using his smartphone, accidentally touches areas on the screen with 0 patience when a misclick happens.
The little card is just easier for him to use

  14. This is why I love germany. It just makes so much sense. If my battery or phone dies, I’ll still have my card to hand. Great idea.

  15. I got both, super cool because mostly I forget my phone and I can show this instead from my wallet
