  1. The hyperbole negates everything, go and shite.

  2. Saved you a click:

On Lunchtime Live, Keith Fay said he believes this makes cars with LEDs a risk to other road users and that he thinks “most people” agree with him.

“I made a post on my Facebook, I got in touch with the RSA, I’ve made an official complaint,” he said.

“Everyone I speak to is saying the very same thing; they’re absolutely too bright.

“In my own case I noticed this winter, when a car comes towards me with LEDs, for a split second, I lose sight of the road.

“I’m out of control and there’s nothing wrong with my eyesight – it’s perfect.”

    Complaint
Mr Fay said he has consulted widely on the issue and found that in every conversation about the issue, people say “the very same thing”.

“They’re too bright; [people] don’t know how they were passed as [safe] for the road,” he said.

“The British Government has now taken action; they’re doing a full study into this based on a petition that got 10,000 signatures.

“So, I’m planning on doing the same.”

Mr Fay said even people who drive cars with LEDs believe there is a problem that needs to be addressed.

“Sometimes when a car with LEDs is coming at me, I’ve flashed them thinking they’ve got their full beams on, then they’ve flashed me back,” he said.

“It’s like a nuclear bomb has gone off – it’s so bright.

“Even people that have LEDs are saying, ‘You know what? They’re great on my car; they light up the road a lot but I see exactly what you’re talking about.’”

According to a survey by the RAC in Britain, 89% believe headlight glare is a problem that needs to be dealt with.

  3. I remember reading about the US dropping LED lights on Japan in the 1940’s.

  4. Personally i hate them. If theres an suv type car behind me or van with them i cant see the mirrors properly.

  5. Surely it’s not LEDs that are the problem? It’s how bright they are being made, no?

There’s ample lumens options for LEDs to purchase for indoor lights. Why can’t they just make them less bright rather than make it an LED problem? Maybe I’m missing something.

  6. Hate them, hate the shitwagons with lights as high as an eye of corn. Bring back nice lights.

  7. Ive got an suv with outrageous led lights. Im gonna change it, people have pulled over when im driving behind them and I get flashed constantly.

I cringe driving it, its got automatic lights that blind the fuck out of everyone. I have to make sure the setting is turned off EVERY TIME i get in to drive.

Just before I get hate, I need to go off road at times. I live in a rural area and also do long journeys for work so I need something that doesn’t drive like a tractor too.

It all made sense at the time 😫 should have got an estate or something.

  8. Yes no need to see the car or ambulance from space … or is there 🤨

  9. Totally blinded I nearly had a crash last week bombarded by 5 one after the other honestly it’s horrific

  10. They let the intern write an article again I guess

  11. They definitely need regulating.

Driving at night when you have an SUV behind you in particular where the LEDs are eye level is genuinely really dangerous this time of year. It completely blinds you

  12. Between led lights and the giant phone screens in cars now I think the safety inspectors must be as corrupt as judges in boxing are to have passed them in safety tests

  13. Newstalk are an absolute embarrassment with the exaggerating.

**News flash – Are people who park in cycle lanes actually worse than Hitler? You decide!**

  14. Maybe not banned but redesigned with a frosted coating to reduce glare and beam downwards. That is the no1 issue.

  15. Can I save this to be angry about next week. I’ve too much other stuff to be angry about this week.

  16. I’ve more of a problem with people waiting until they get close to you before putting the dims on

  17. yes and all auto makers should recall every car equipped with led as stock to redo it. because mechanics #1 dont have a clue how to properly align lights anymore it seems and #2 people dont care to even get them aligned properly. one shines upwards, one shines left/right , goodluck to everyone else on the road!

  18. Let’s do what the French did and put yellow headlights on cars. Remember seeing French cars years ago and they had the yellow headlights? They stopped doing that in the early 90s but it was cool.

  19. I was in my uncle’s car last weekend, coming back from a family gathering. In about 7km from there to my place I’d say 5 or 6 cars coming towards us gave us the full beams as they felt he hadn’t dipped his. He absolutely had dipped his but they were still blinding (23 Dacia)

Modern leds in cars range from 2000-4000 lumens, I find the ones on the green and yellow Bus Eireann coaches the worst due to their height.

  20. The biggest problem is people fitting them to older cars. The old style reflector housings and even some of the projector one are totally unsuited to LEDs. They don’t focus the light at all and just cause it to shine in all directions.

  21. How do these cars pas a mot test. Beam pattern and alignment is part of the test .

  22. Regulations on lumens is whats needed. Not the type of bulb.

  23. People who don’t have a good grasp on how a technology works shouldn’t have a say in how it’s used.

    Just dim the fucking LEDs.

  24. Alot of people dont seem to realise headlights can be adjusted.. also having the auto dimming lights set up properly helps.

Lorries have had light that can turn night into day for a long time, yet rarely have issues with them do we? Properly because most lads in lorries have them properly set up and use them correctly.

  25. Theres no fixing how dumb most people are. If you’re on a motorway at night and feel you need your full beams on AT ALL, you shouldn’t be driving full stop.

  26. I would say no, but a control of brightness most definitely.

Also, I think nuclear weapons could be useful. When not being used for the annihilation of human life. Like redirecting asteroids or doing something as insane as an orion/Medusa drive.

But yeah, LEDs pointed at your eyes at night are aweful.

  27. In 1932, the first request to use polarized lamps and windscreens were proposed. This would eliminate any headlamp glare. But because it would have added the price of a pair of sunglasses to a new car, manufacturers successfully stopped it becoming a standard feature.

  28. As soon as tech like VW LED matrix becomes standard this won’t be an issue anymore

  29. I got absolutely blasted in both side mirrors by a Dublin Bus last week. They’re horrendous! And maybe it isn’t the fact that they’re LEDs but they need to be focused or adjusted properly or shielded maybe. They’re just way too dangerous.

  30. If only there was a good public body that would set the rules around this.

    The RSA sucks.

  31. Retrofitted LEDs to a car that didn’t have original from factory is an NCT fail, as they will throw light everywhere.
Gardai already have powers to tackle drivers who blind others….

  32. Yes they should and they should be more regulated for businesses. They are murderous to insects because they are so highly illuminated that they hunted relentlessly. Ireland is crazy bad for light pollution. It’s gone to the stage where I sometimes get eye spasms from bright lights.

  33. Some people seem to have no idea how to level or lower their headlights. The law should be that they all automatically self level as is the case with bi-xenon lights.

  34. A part of this is definitely the auto full light, which will only dip the lights when another car’s light are already seen. People are lazy and will use it.

On the other hand, with manual control we can easily see when a car is approaching around a bend due to the lighting change and dip our lights in advance.

Also my auto sensor sometimes takes ages or doesn’t work, maybe the other car is off centre, the sensor is dirty, or it’s foggy or rainy, in which case I grab at the stalk to dip them. With the wrong timing, the lights will auto dim just as I grab the stalk and it looks like I’m flashing incoming traffic. There is no off seeing for my car, so they will always default to auto.

Tldr auto is not great on many cars.
