I find it amusing that Putin decided to mention in his full speech how in WW2 USSR tried to prevent the war. Yet they made a pact with Germany and then invaded Poland…

  4. As far as I know, USSR not prevent war, they did Riventrop-Molotov pact about not atacking each other and they BOTH attack Poland. After that USSR trade with Germany and provide them important resources to war effort (like oil… ).

    In meanwhile Ussr attack Finland.

    In 1941, Stalin was warned by his inteligence, that Germany prepare to attack Ussr, but he did not listen. After that operation Barbarossa strikes and USSR must be in war against Germany.

    Putin (and Kreml propaganda) just change history events in his speeches as he needs.

  7. the non-agression pact is a false argument against the USSR, I’d like us to drop it once and for all…
    Not only was it the only obvious solution for the state the USSR was in,but all major european forces had similar agreements with Germany, France, the UK and so on…

  8. It’s a bit more complicated than that. Yes, USSR was an aggressor in the WWII. But before that, they were one of the states that during the 1930s repeatedly warned against German threats and were looking for an anti-German alliance.

    …in 1939 they actively helped the Germans. I think that’s what he forgot to say

  15. If you google Maxim Litvinov and read about his time as commisar of foreign affairs you will find out the USSR did in fact try to form an anti german coalition with France and Britain to prevent war. These attempts fell apart due to the Munich agreement.

If you watch his entire state of address he spends the first half of it, I would say almost ranting about such a broad range of topics – Lenin, artificial creation of Ukraine, Soviet Union, 90s, financial groups, neo nazis, dissolution of the USSR, rapings etc. There is just so much to unpack there. My personal take from it is that Putin and Russian leadership have a superiority complex. They are fixated on their fall as a superpower and use their perceived historical grievances as justification for their actions. With the logic that they’re using you can use it to make up any justification you want for an invasion, war or attempt to reassert influence.

  20. talking about WWII parallels – back then, kremlin cunts demanded, that polish partisans should lay down their weapons, or be killed. They wiped out non communist resistance and installed puppet government. Does it sound familiar today?

  24. USSR wanted to make a pact with allies over Germany, but when it came to actually signing the pact allies send diplomats that didn’t have the authority to sign it, so USSR didn’t have a choice. Learn history before jumping to conclusions.
