People in England told to pay council tax by direct debit to get £150 rebate

  1. Note that this is the energy “rebate” that was previously announced, not anything new.

You can still get it if you don’t pay by direct debit, but you’ll probably have to put in a claim, because the council doesn’t have your bank details to pay it directly.

  2. My council tax is less than £150 a month anyway, because I live on my own and so get a discount, so in effect this will just mean I get a third free month this year.

  3. Give the council a DD? Bugger off. They’ll get their standing order (which is under my control, not theirs) and they’ll bloody well like it.

No way I am giving that shower of incompetents control.

Hole this DD pish doesn’t cross the border.

  4. I wish we’d stop calling this plan of Sunak’s anything along the lines of a loan, rebate, discount… its more like an imposed levy. You are forced to accept it and forced to pay money back in the following years (even if you never received the initial cash)

A rebate is a refund. This aint it.
A loan is getting money you later pay back. Dont think people who are yet to have their own home will view it like they took out a loan when they never got the initial money.

  5. Remember it was the Tories who forced Council Tax on the people to replace their Poll Tax which had no predecessor for most. Council a Tax is a Tory Tax.

  6. So if someone were in receipt of council tax benefit or a student or otherwise not paying money to the council because they were existing on very little income, how does this work.

A hand out most difficult to claim for the people who need it most.
