British Airways suffers major outage with ‘all flights grounded at Heathrow’

  1. And so the Russia / China global cyber war on the West has gone from cold to hot. Get ready for this to start happening all over the place.

  2. BA had a very similar outage last week. People assumed it was the storms and the chaos that ensued. I think that, rather than Russian cyber attacks, this is the result of cost cutting. You can cut IT without an immediate degradation in service, but eventually it’s all going to fall in a big heap.

  3. I am an IT worker. There is no way on God’s green planet that suddenly an entire businesses worth of systems suddenly grind to a halt. A company worth, and the size of, British Airways has almost certainly got disaster recovery, SaaS and PaaS backup in the cloud ready to align to their real world ops in a matter of moments.

From what I have read in the (horrible ad-filled) article, it looks like it’s being caused by a problem with check-in systems, which AFAIK, are powered by the airport and their systems.

This is just my experience, but this looks like a data centre issue or possibly a net failure which is impacting data centre operations. Again, a company the size of LHR will have DR options to fire up and you would “assume” that they have provisioned their day to day operations over multiple, multi-region data centre environments so that all their eggs are not in one easily targetable basket.

I think theres a temptation to put one and one together and assume its the action of a nation state or some hacking group when it could be as simple as, some twat has ploughed through a major fibre trunk and has done some serious damage. That, or a power cut has happened which has taken down an on-site data centre that has a main and backup link (which would be unbelievably stupid to configure that way but hey, I have seen worse)…

  4. Fucking BA man, had a mare flying out last Saturday, Heathrow was an utter shambles. Woke up at 5 to find my flight back to London cancelled today after a barrage of “we’ll do better next time” useless emails. They don’t send emails or notifications about useful things like delays or cancellations though, you need to open the app to find that out for yourself.
