‘Disappointment’ over sentences for France mass rape trial defendants • FRANCE 24 English

A French court on Thursday handed down sentences against 51 men found guilty of participating in the mass rape of Gisèle Pelicot, with terms ranging from 20 years for her ex-husband to three years for others. Main perpetrator Dominique Pelicot got the maximum term of 20 years under the charges of aggravated rape, but his 50 co-defendants received jail terms of between three and 15 years — less than what prosecutors had demanded and leaving some who had been hoping for harsher sentences disappointed, reports France 24’s Selina Sykes.

  1. They have health problems? Clearly, mental health issues. Why was the court so lenient with the perpetrators/rapists/sexual assaultants?

  2. Sorry, the reporter is dreadful. I realise she is probably bilingual, but her 'dead' voice is difficult to understand with all its stops and starts. This case is extremely important, and needed an experienced reporter to cover it well.

  3. I am not surprised by the sentences. When I lived in Valenciennes almost 20 years ago, it took the police more than an hour to come to my assistance following a domestic violence call to them.

  4. To continue yesterdays' polemic…
Again not to belittle or detract from the horror of what the plaintiff was exposed to but Selina Sykes should not be allowed to report on any thing more serious than the Chelsea Flower Show.
No weight or gravitas to her commentary just dire English pronunciation.
Free (3) men who will be walking free (not guilty).
She also annunciates like a horse racing commentator – all becomes clearer, she's a sports journalist, so why is she reporting on 1 of the most high profile stories to come out of France since Charlie Hebdo?
She should be calling bingo numbers in Clacton.
