According to an old book on historic traditional fashion around the world, this fabric and costume is Croatian, but tells not much else. What is the fabric called? Is it still available? It’s supposed to be linen. Thank you! Sorry about the flair, I don’t speak Croatian, so I just picked one.

  1. It is linen, woven on a traditional weaving loom (tkalački stan). The design is done during the weaving process. The one in the picture is very elaborate, I presume the outfit on the picture is a traditional bridal outfit, so that is the reasons for it’s “richness”.

I have some less elaborate items done in similar technique (tablecloths, towels and just plain bolts of fabric) with similar design woven by my grandmother and aunt. It was part of tradition to prepare such items for female children to be presented to them once they grow up, on the day of their wedding (something like a trousseau).

I guess there are still grandmas in rural Croatia who practice this art. I googled and there are just some magazine articles about these rare women, but nothing anywhere about their products being commercially available. Maybe somebody else will know more.

  2. [Lado](https://www.lado.hr/en/) is our professional national folk dance ensemble. Try contact them, they cover most of ours nationals dances, from Salvonia to Dalmatia. Their costume department should be able to help. There is also [museum ](https://emz.hr/kontakt-2/) which has exibits on our national herritage, like toys, chlothes, local customs…

I don’t know anything about this subject, but the motive on the right part of picture looks like tobacco leaves. Some parts of Slavonia are famous for growing tobacco.
