‘The idea of the respectable family man has been dented’ • FRANCE 24 English

Frenchwoman Gisele Pelicot, who survived a decade of sexual abuse by her husband and dozens of strangers, said she hoped her ordeal would help make the world a better place for “women and men alike” as her former spouse was jailed for 20 years. FRANCE 24’s Sharon Gaffney speaks to feminist writer Cécile Simmons, a researcher at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue.

  1. Lawyer of rapist , my client is free – did he mean the” rapist who paid me is free “ shame on the lawyer.

  2. I hope France implements laws about consent. The Sean Coombs case in the US may become about consent amongst other things, given the number of legal cases being filed with people citing the experience of being drugged and raped.

  3. Enough of the nice guy and respectable husband dialogue. He gave up that title the moment he decided to venture into depravity and crime. I hope Gisele finds privacy and peace after this horror.

  4. Why are feminists taking up this cause? This is a matter of basic human rights and dignity that all humans are entitled to regardless of gender. I am not a feminist (the furthest thing from it) and having this cause taken up by feminists will only serve to pigeon hole this as a "feminist issue". It is not a feminist issue it is a basic human dignity issue. WTF is rape culture? how sick is France?

  5. How mentally disturbed does a man need to be to participate in the rape of an unconscious woman? Should that disturbed person be walking around free in the community? I think not. Who thinks this is acceptable? We should probably be worried about a justice system that feels this is acceptable. ⚠️

  6. It annoys me that women who fight for their rights are labeled feminists. Are men who want to be treated equally and not be raped called male- inists? Of course not.

  7. 0:49 The fact that one of the lawyers tried to”boast” by saying “my client is free”. First, it seems weird to brag since his client was found guilty. Also, taunting protestors seems just so unprofessional.

  8. The whole event never figured once in today's Guardian, the most progressive of uk news papers. Already forgotten apart from the rabid right poking at the state of France. This sort of thing would never happen in hloier than though Britain..

  9. In regards to the respectable family man- can I ask for clarification on something I heard third hand? Is it true that many French husbands indulge in affairs as a common practice? If true, it is a different world from the one I know… I realize every country has its own personality.
