“Solution is to dissolve NATO”, says PCP

  1. >Despite demarcated his Russian ruling party led by Vladimir Putin, the statements by the SECRETARY-GENERAL of the PCP at the party’s 101st anniversary rally on Sunday generated a wave of criticism. // Jerónimo de Sousa’s speech at a rally commemorating the 101st anniversary of the CFP in Campo Pequeno continues to generate criticism after the communist secretary general advocated the dismilitarization of the European Union and the dissolution of NATO.

    >On Twitter, economist Luís Aguiar-Conraria, professor at the University of Minho, begins by mocking: “Great speech by Jerónimo de Sousa”. Afterwards, the professor writes that this speech “begins by identifying the first culprits in the invasion of Ukraine by Russia”, which are, for Jerónimo, “the USA, the European Union and NATO”.

    >”Then it identifies those who gain from the war and its prolongation: the United States,” he adds in another publication. “Finally, it presents the solutions: to end economic sanctions and to demilitarise the European Union. Bright. Look if they supported Russian imperialism,” Luis Aguiar-Conraria said.

    > Journalist Carlos Vaz Marques also criticized the party’s position, referring to a lapse by Jerónimo during the speech.

    >But the criticism hasn’t been left here. In social networks, the words of condemnation of Jerónimo de Sousa’s speech were multiplied.

    >It is recalled that the secretary-general of the CFP on Sunday descheduled his Russian ruling party led by Vladimir Putin and called for peace in Ukraine, complaining that this war has been “a pretext for a new anti-communist campaign.”

    >At a rally commemorating the 101st anniversary of the CFP in Campo Pequeno, Lisbon, in which “peace yes, war no” was shouted, Jerónimo de Sousa condemned “Russia’s recent military intervention in Ukraine and the intensification of the warring escalation of the United States, NATO and the European Union.”

    >”The CFP does not support war. That’s a shameful slander. The CFP has an unparalleled heritage in the fight for peace. The CFP has nothing to do with the Russian government and its President. The pcp class option is opposed to that of the political forces that govern capitalist Russia and its economic groups,” he said.

    >The SECRETARY-GENERAL of the CFP then accused the United States of America of long-carrying out a “strategy of arms escalation and imperialist domination” and of promoting a “coup d’état” in Ukraine in 2014, “which established a xenophobic and warlike power.”

  2. Basically, the Portuguese Communist Party says the fault for the Russian invasion is the West.

For those wondering, they, the PCP, still love Stalin.

  3. The communist left not facing the same scrutiny in the west as the nazies, is one of the reasons kids are dying in Ukraine right now.

  4. This is only true if the question is ‘My name is Vladimir Putin. How can I get out of this without shooting myself in the head?’

  5. For those who are not aware, this political party keeps voting against every attempt to condemn the russian government, not just in Portugal but also in the EU parliament, using a very cynical argument that “it won’t do anything, we need to promote dialogue solutions between the parts”, yet they fail to present any solutions and have continously avoided to mention that russia is illegally and immorally invading a soberane state. Instead, they keep claiming that war between the two countries has been in place since 2014 and the fault lies in the US and NATO. These ludicrous ideas have been furthered at their party event this weekend, where the leader once again faulted NATO and the US, said that NATO should be dissolved, the EU should stop providing arms to Ukraine and “we should find dialogue solutions”. He went as far as suggesting that the Ukrainian government is fascist and neo-nazi, exactly what the kremlin has been saying.

Despite the disgust, most portuguese are not surprised with this stance from the communist party and many voters have already expressed disappointment in their party. Actually, this party has been falling in recent elections, namely the most recent elections in January in which they could only hold 4,29% of the votes.

  6. Portuguese here, pay no mind to this geriatric fool. Its been an increasingly irrelevant party, sustained by older generations who saw it in better light following the fall of the Portuguese dictatorship.

  7. PCP being PCP. It’s beyond me why some Portuguese people still vote them in the 21th century.

  8. This would be the solution if this war was solely about NATO and security guarantees for Russia. It’s not. The NATO question was solved in 2014 for Russia when they annexed Crimea and sent in began backing separatists in Luhansk and Donetsk. NATO membership officially died for Ukraine then and there. If Russia wanted to stop Ukraine from joining NATO then all they had to do was continue arming separatists in these regions and keep the low intensity conflict going for years. Then why start a whole war? Because this isn’t about NATO. NATO has been a variable in West/Ukraine-Russia relations for years but it has far from the cause of what we’re seeing now.

Simply put it, Putin cannot tolerate the very existence of a free and independent Ukraine that is free to choose its own path, it’s own leaders, it’s own course in the world. How would Russians back home view it when they see a country such as a Ukraine – one in which they have so many similarities, family ties, historical and cultural roots – actually thriving and doing better than Russia? It is absolutely inconceivable this could take place for Putin. There can be no freedom or such prosperity or western alignment on Russia’s borders. Hence why Putin has over the years invaded and destabilised over neighbouring countries such as Georgia, kicked off a process of slowly annexing Belarus in all but name only, put down protests in Kazakhstan recently whcih threatened the Government, previously backed pro-Russian leaders in countries like Ukraine (think Kuchma, Yanukovych et al) and elsewhere, intervened in a conflict in Moldova, etc. If Russians back home begin seeing that the countries bordering itself – countries which it considers to be friendly brotherly nations – begins setting its own path and thriving, they will wake up and quickly take care of Putin. His fears originate from the coloured revolutions we saw in post Soviet countries as well as the Arab spring, Euromaidan, etc. Putin is a kleptocrat and a tyrant, him and his siloviki have enriched themselves off the backs of Russian people and stolen an immense amount of wealth, all this is about right now is keeping hold of power and lasting long enough.

There is also another more sinister side to this coin though for Putin which I think a lot of people have ignored for years but has always been there brewing within the many fucked up layers of Russian chauvinism. Putin does not believe Ukraine is a country. It is an artificial creation according to him which, as he said during his declaration of war, owes its entire existence to Lenin and the Bolsheviks. Of course though, Putin’s knowledge of history deliberately only goes as far back as the early 20th century to justify his horrendous views. He does not believe that Ukrainians are any different from Russians, he does not believe in their language, their culture, their history, their own traditions, etc. Not only is he bent on destroying Ukraine as a state but he is also fixed on destroying Ukraine as a nation.

Of course though, he won’t succeed. We’re all too familiar with the fates of the Ceausescus, Mussolinis, Gadaffi and Hussein. We know how this will end in the long term for Putin, the question is no longer IF but WHEN. Nations are born out of war and conflict, the Ukraine that will emerge will be far stronger and more United than ever.

  9. I mean yeah I guess the solution to end all of this turmoil is to dissolve NATO.

That way, Russia can do whatever the fuck they want and theres no turmoil! Great success (for Putin, not the hundreds of millions of people in NATO and Europe).

  10. Dissolve nato and the day after:
    -Turkey invades Greece
    -Greece invades Turkey
    -Russia invades Finland, Georgia simultaneously
    -Serbia invades Kosova
    -China invades Taiwan
    -North Korea nukes south
-USA and China start a nuclear war

  11. This should really be a test for Russia, not the whole PCP statement. If Russia stops the war in Ukraine, lets people have a two party system, allows liberal ideas and gives back Lugansk and Donetsk to Ukraine, we dissolve NATO. NATO exists to defend people from Russia. If Russia is not a threat, then we just dismantle it. Also one cheeky small letter part in the ultimatum to make Putin make a youtube apology video with Lil Nas X music in the background (preferably Montero)

  12. You’ll hear similar sentiments from Swedish communists as well. Anytime the US, Israel or Europe is involved, it’s the worst thing ever and we should boycott everyone. But when Russia invades, it’s “Oh but Ukraine has done terrible things as well, so it evens out” or Sweden shouldn’t pick sides and stay neutral.

I say let them show their hypocrisy stinks just as bad as everyone else’s.

  13. This is small party that some people vote because it’s core message is about workers rights, but I don’t know personally anyone in Portugal that beliefs in comunism.

  14. Interesting to see how the coutries close to Russia have less of these idiots now than countries like Portugal. Russian invasion almost 180d oppositions views on Russia other than couple of fringe politicians.

  15. Heh, like Podemos in Spain calling for “precision diplomacy”.

Like alright, you can be the first to walk into Sumy and say they’re being big meanies and need to stop.

Thankfully the Socialists made sure that they didn’t get Ministry of Defense or Foreign Relations. I do see a possibility of Ukraine breaking the government of Spain as half of the government is now openly against the government.

  16. Here in Ireland we also have a few of these idiot types. They fucked off to the European Parliament where they have been, and still are, apologists for Putin and Russia.

  17. Ironically the dissolution of the NATO seemed like a good idea before Russians made it relevant again. I do remember many European countries voicing their opinions that this organization became an irrelevant and burdensome anachronism. But then we came along and made it relevant. What can I say, you are welcome.

    PSA: I am Russian

  18. These useful idiots are sad relics of another time who are unable to accept that their beloved USSR has long since been replaced by a far right wing ethno-nationalist, quasi-fascist regime. Pathetic.

  19. All stalinist parties across Europe are the same. Here in Greece they will also say “Capitalist Putin bad, but NATO such and such”. Why they are not treated the same way as Nazi organisations is insane.
