Brian Murray of New Waterford received a King Charles III Coronation Medal and certificate from Sydney—Victoria MP Jaime Battiste on Saturday at Hospice Cape Breton in Sydney.

Now 71, Murray served as lay director for the Challenge Movement in Cape Breton, volunteered with the likes of the Spanish River Community Centre and L’Arche Cape Breton.

He also founded Camp Breton Dean in Albert Bridge, where he hosted Challenge weekends for Catholic teens, as well as their adult counterpart Cursillo retreats, previously held at the Villa Madonna in Little Bras d’Or.

The medal, Battiste said on Saturday, was awarded for “any community volunteers or members who have made a significant contribution to Canada or the particular province, region or community in Canada.”
