Hi there !

So I come across this video which is basically a social experiment testing people’s reaction to violence against women in an elevator. The video was quite shocking to me, pretty much no one reacted and said anything…

Is this shocking to you as a Swede or is it something you expected?

  1. It does not surprise me, swedes are very non confrontational, that one lady whose reaction was to say “I’m in here too, let me get off first” felt quite typical. You’re not supposed to inconvenience other people with your behaviour in Sweden, it is very frowned upon to cause a scene so that lady was seemingly nothing but annoyed that order was being disturbed. Causing a scene puts a barrier between “them”, the unruly people, and “us”, those who behave appropriately. You do not get involved with the unruly people. It seems that notion overruled anyones feelings or concern for the young woman’s safety.

  2. This is a stress response that pretty much everyone has. When I trained to be a firefighter we had specific exercises to get over it, because going into a dangerous situation is not a natural thing to do. Most people freeze up when confronted with a scary situation, and don’t act until they get instructions. Had the girl asked for help, and snapped the person in the elevator out of their state of shock, at least some of them would have intervened, maybe even most.

And if you find yourself in a situation like this, exit the elevator quitely, and the call the police. You don’t want to be in a locked room with a violent psycho.

Edit: The “social experiment” is pretty much bullshit.

  3. Kom igen.
