Many moons ago, I was a young lad, green and naïve, I came back home and told my parents I’m taking GCSE French.
Mum was in tears, dad in utter disbelief. “What’s wrong with Spanish?!”. I insisted on my choice.
Years later, I wouldn’t say I’m a francophile but I learned to enjoy French culture. Cinema, music (love me some Serge Gainsbourg) and literature (nothing like a bit of Baudelaire to edge when you’re feeling low).
Do I regret my choice? No. Family learned to accept me. But most importantly – KNOW THY ENEMY!
Why would someone be a Francophile in 2024? They used to have interesting culture but I can’t name one thing from the last 15 years that I care about.

Coming out as a Francophile was less hard for me because my parents understood it came from a mutual hatred of the English
