Yeah we stopped the Oligarchs from flying to the uk and Russian bans uk planes.
Presumably we don’t want to fly over there at the moment given their penchant for shooting down airliners.
This is really going to affect people more who want to go east Asia. For example when you go to Tokyo, you have to stop off in Russia. It’s really going to cause flight prices to increase due to longer flights meaning more fuel to burn which will increase prices.
Edit: wasn’t aware that you can get direct flights to Tokyo.
UK: “I’ll ban russian flights”
Russia: “NO, I’LL BAN UK FLIGHTS! ” *Crybaby noises*
Not really a punishment is it? In fact now I feel safer now knowing they probably won’t shoot down anymore civilian aircraft.
This is like me banning Scarlet Johansson from having sex with me
British pilot. I flew across Russia last night to a destination in Asia. Looks like we were one of the last UK aircraft to transit Russian airspace. Due to head home in a couple of days but assuming it will be a much longer route back probably via the Gulf. Russian ATC were perfectly civil as usual but we had a feeling this was coming so carried a load of extra fuel just in case.
Oh shame. Guess I’ll just fly over you in Flight Simulator instead
Don’t Russian navy vessels often enter UK waters? The usual response seems to be to “monitor” their presence or send a UK naval vessel to chase them off. Maybe we should put the word out that next time it happens they’ll get the full Belgrano treatment.
Looks like Anchorage may make a come back as a layover destination on certain routes
A more useful tactic might be if Putin banned russian donations to the tory party.
Good thing we fly aeroplanes *sips tea mordaciously*
No planes should be leaving from or arriving into Russia from the rest of the world at the moment. Russia and the Russian people need to experience this hurt so that it resonates with them to remove Putin from power.
Anchorage is about to become a major transit airport again.
And I’ll happily add one or two hours to my trip. Recliner seat, a bit of wine, and some in flight entertainment is all I need!
Russian airspace is naturally gigantic and largely unavoidable for efficient flight. This is a serious problem, particularly for commerce.
All those joking and saying who the fuck cares, maybe show a bit of fucking empathy.
My wife’s family is originally from Russia (fled to the U.K. when she was 5 with nothing more than the clothes on her back. Not all Russians in the U.K. are wealthy oligarchs…), and she’s been trying to visit her 91 year old nan (who lives alone) for two years. Finally after covid we thought we’d be able to visit her and had booked tickets for the long weekend coming up. Now that’s been cancelled too and she’s resigned to the fact she’ll never be able to see her Nan again.
These restrictions seriously affect ordinary innocent people as well. We financially support her so have been trying to send money to her over the last day but it’s getting more and more difficult and may soon be impossible. It’s an unbelievably shitty situation for people from so many different backgrounds.
And yes, I’m fully expecting loads of blowback and downvoted because all Russians are evil apparently and I’m evil for feeling bad for ordinary Russians when their crackpot dictator who nobody voted for has gone full tonto.
Yes, I have a huge amount of sympathy for Ukrainians and they are in a worse position than my wife and her Nan, but empathy isn’t a binary thing that’s only given to the absolute worst affected
Why would a UK air line plane fly through a war zone in the first place, and who in there right mind would, plus the insurance companies would void there insurance if they did. So I can’t understand why a news channel would report on this. But then again, anything to sell adverts.
