  1. >Without Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ revenue-raising decisions, there would be no new investment for the NHS or the resources to scrap her own policy on WFP.

    >Scottish Labour should claim credit for the Budget measures and either vote for the plan or abstain.

    >Swinney’s draft Budget laid out the spending allocations for each portfolio – a set of decisions Labour cannot be against in principle. They could support the plan and quickly pivot to the SNP’s weak spot of delivery.

    >**But Labour sources believe helping pass the budget would scupper Swinney and change the focus onto delivery.**

    >Sarwar’s party has a knee-jerk hostility to all SNP Budgets, a loathing borne out of electoral humblings since 2007. In Michael Marra, Sarwar has a shadow cabinet finance secretary whose hostility to the SNP is palpable.

    >**But party insiders want Sarwar to take a fresh approach to the Budget and not give Swinney the ammo he desires. They believe that by voting against the Budget Labour MSPs will be voting against the extra cash Reeves has provided to Holyrood.**

I’d recommend reading the article before passing judgement, because it does make an interesting point, and by pushing the narrative to delivery, they could put pressure on the SNP.

They could say, we (Labour) gave you the extra cash needed, we helped pass your budget, providing cash to front-line services. No more excuses. We need to see delivery.

(That’s speaking purely from a strategic point of view)

  2. Right so it’s not so much what is good for Scotland – it’s about political point scoring.

Labour really are a loathsome bunch.

  3. Whatever happens, expect ‘Scottish’ Labour to vote in their own interests and inevitably fuck it up somehow.

  4. It’s not just a budget, it’s a confidence motion in the government.

Why would someone who thinks the SNP is incompetent support their incompetence? Especially someone they take every opportunity to attack at every turn.

It’s quite funny to watch them try to turn their failure to pass a budget on Labour, when they’d be fine had they not blown up the deal with the greens in such an unnecessarily stupid way.

They’ve got themselves and their combative approach to everyone, including supposed friends and partners, to blame for this. Though I suppose it wouldn’t be the SNP if they weren’t trying to point this finger in any direction but theirs.

If they care so desperately about those kids, they could accept the Lib Dems deal and put Indy spending on the back burner, and give some more funding and control to local councils.
