Passengers and visitors at Athens International Airport (AIA) on December 16 were treated to a virtual journey to Iceland as part of the popular Cultural DestiNAtions program.
The initiative, a collaboration between AIA and the Social Cooperative Enterprise “PHELLOE”, offered an immersive exploration of Iceland’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.
Located in the Departures level, the event featured a range of engaging activities and performances that highlighted the unique charm of the Arctic destination.
A standout moment was a choreography inspired by the music of iconic Icelandic artist Björk, accompanied by live performances from an Icelandic soprano and pianist. These artistic elements celebrated Iceland’s vibrant cultural and literary traditions.
Visitors participated in hands-on experiences, including crafting Christmas ornaments inspired by Huldufólk, mythical Icelandic creatures. A themed photobooth allowed guests to transform into elves, while virtual reality (VR) technology brought the awe-inspiring Northern Lights and volcanic eruptions to life.
One of the event’s highlights was an impressive art installation honoring the Icelandic tradition of Jólabókaflóðið, or the “Christmas Book Flood”.
Guests could also enjoy knowledge quizzes and video presentations featuring breathtaking Icelandic landscapes and interviews with notable influencers.
The experience was complemented by a culinary offering, with a buffet showcasing Icelandic cuisine and its rich gastronomic traditions.
The Cultural DestiNAtions program, an initiative by Athens International Airport in collaboration with PHELLOE, aims to bring the world’s cultural treasures to travelers in Athens.
Following the success of the Iceland event, the program will continue in 2025, introducing even more destinations and unforgettable experiences.
