Cyprus warned that any potential maritime agreement between Turkey and Syria must comply with international law, especially the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and respect Cyprus’ sovereignty.

Government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said the government is closely monitoring the situation. “Any attempt to undermine or ignore Cyprus’ sovereign rights would violate international law. Cyprus will take all necessary measures at the international and European levels,” he said.

Letymbiotis added that President Nikos Christodoulides, in coordination with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, has briefed European Union leaders on Turkey’s possible actions and has secured EU backing.

The statement follows Turkish media reports about a potential maritime deal between Turkey and Syria in the contested waters of the Eastern Mediterranean.
