Nah fuck Queens, the lot of them think they’re better than they actually are, and their requirements (like academic subjects) are funny when the courses aren’t much different from Ulster’s.
>! To clarify, there’s plenty of sound people who go to Queens, but Queens act very pretentious when they’re not all that special !<
Honestly, one of my biggest regrets is going here instead of mainland UK. My undergrad was fine but for a ‘research-focused’ university, my post-grads (MRes & PhD) were absolutely dire.
Culchi Cambridge is gold btw stealing that
I’ve found Queen’s very overrated, and have had that sentiment echoed by a few others that were doing different courses.
No normal adult gives a fuck where you got your degree from, bar a vanishingly small bunch of insufferable cunts. The only thing worse is the “degrees are useless mate” set.
Last year, I went to see a friend of mine in the East Midlands, and while in conversation with his wider friend group, there was one person who had only once visited NI before, and that was someone who went to a QUB open day, since Queen’s is kinda the “cheapest Russell Group”.
What scared this person away from Belfast was the demographics – most English cities tend to have a lot of people who have grandparents or great-grandparents who migrated to Britain in the 50s and 60s. As such there’s a pretty wide racial diversity. Something Belfast didn’t have, thanks to the Troubles making the place too scary for many people to move to.
I went to UUC, and the North-West isn’t exactly a place of ethnic diversity, but I personally found that people will go to uni regardless of their background, and are probably more likely to respect you for knowing a thing or two. Queen’s abolished the degree I did, and the only other unis on the island that offered it were TCD, NUIM and UCC – at the time, CAO’s points system basically made it impossible for anyone doing just 3 A levels to get into any course.
i’m old and I got away with virtually no debt as fees didn’t exist and you still mostly had full grants too if you are from a non monied background. The changes that have happened over the last 30 odd years are tragic. Basically if you are wealthy your parents can fund it all but if you are poor you need to sacrifice hours and energy to work a job. That’s a clear advantage to the well of in their studies.
At least QUB isn’t as bad as *this* debacle of an advert. They literally had to take it down since it was false advertising xD
Advances in Generative AI, along with Quantum Computing may mean that by 2030, the best college to aim for, will be those grubby grey regional tech hubs: that teach folks to cut wood, lay blocks, clear pipes and twist wires, all flourished with a bog standard City & Guilds.
Then, if you still want to do some more niche RG modules, slap on a VR headset at the workshop, for a personalised, tailored short course with live feedback and an adaptive learning pathway.
Or could also likely source and download it for free elsewhere.
