Skateboards in Waterloo walking bridge? What is this?

  1. From what I remember: this started as a tribute to a skateboarder who died. It shifted into a ritualistic kind of thing with the kids who skate at the park on the south bank.

  2. In respect of a lad called Timo who was murdered in 1999. Although I suspect it’s lost its original meaning.

  3. It’s a tribute to a murder victim as I recall.

Also, this is not Waterloo Bridge, it’s the lower Golden Jubilee Footbridge/Hungerford Bridge (depending on who you ask). Waterloo Bridge is the one in the background of the photo.

  4. Others have answered the question but just to add, there used to be more boards before a cleanup crew accidentally cleared it, not realising its significance. It’s starting to build up again now and is, I think, better known than it used to be

  5. Also, it’s one of the Golden Jubilee (foot) Bridges, and it’s not Waterloo

  6. Holy crap, I met one of the people responsible after he got out of prison.

I didn’t realise why the skateboards were there

  7. So fucking sad. RIP Timo
As a skater at the time (and the same age) this rocked the whole community across the country.
I hope the consequences of their choices have bitten them hard in life

  8. I walk over this bridge when i’m in the office on my lunch time walk and always wondered about this, & never thought of looking it up, so thank you!

  9. Timo was one of my best mates and favourite people. I think about him a lot and still miss him. I still use some of the funny little phrases he had, like “skill twist” for tidying shit up. He loved hip hop. He was so clever.
