At the press conference, Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson said that a Swedish membership application to NATO would contribute to destabilising the situation in Europe.

  2. Swedish politicians are so deep in denialism, that it makes climate change activists blush.

  3. Well not quite, she’s playing right into Putin’s hand actually. Reinforcing NATO is what should be done now. Stop Chamberlain’ing that lil madman for crying out loud.

  4. Typical Sweden, it’s easy to show a neutral face when they know they will be protected from a Russian attack to the last Finn.

  5. Swedish socialists are in total denial and nothing can make them change their mind. They rule Sweden like nothing has changed since the 50s.

  6. This is absolutely moronic in every way and makes me feel better about how terribly I would presumably do were I accidentally to end up in control of a nation.

Like, I may have an IQ of 9, but at least that sets me firmly above this level of decisionmaking acumen.

  7. Swedes hate making hard decisions. They’d rather go ahead and pretend nothing happened. Just don’t create a huge discussion and make a decision that might be seen unfavourable by any part of their society. See their failed Covid-19 response…

  8. You guys don’t understand the Swedish mindset, we’re not people who rush ahead and make rash decisions in the heat of the moment.

During the pandemic most countries took many quick and in hindsight rash decisions that caused much distress and anger, this country kept on trucking like it was 2019.

We will most likely just reestablish a modern version of the defense capabilities we had during the cold war and call it a day.

  9. There is a major economic risk if Sweden and especially Finland won’t join Nato. Also we both have very strategic Baltic islands Gotland and Åland which would be great Nato bases.

I hope this statement was just covert Finlandization.

  10. The US needs to leave NATO pronto. NATO is obsolete and has a bad track record, Afghanistan was a NATO operation for 20 years. The 500 million E.U. citizens need to form and fund their own security. Russia has 148 million, it’s not even close. Please get the USA out of NATO. Our Alaska/Russia border has been shared peacefully since 1868.

  11. Give it some time. The swedish right wants to join the alliance and the third biggest party SD is about to flip. Soon a majority will be for joining.

  12. and yet he would prob expects NATO to defend him in the case sweden gets attacked lol. i so much hate the “have your cake and eat it too crowd”: “hey man lets not join NATO so we don’t have to fulfil the funding requirements and also not to ruffle some feathers but lets expect NATO to defend us. Also we want the EU to defend us as well but we will veto any EU army initiative hihi cand’t have the inefficient EU have an army”!.

  13. If Finland joins and Sweden doesn’t follow them into the alliance, our entire defensive strategy is upended and made worthless. Increasing public and political support for Nato makes it seem inevitable, and in my opinion Finland’s decision will determine the Swedish timetable for joining Nato.

Andersson might be trying to be responsible here and wait with any announcement about joining, in some belief that this will avoid provoking an unstable Putin. But in my opinion, the decision rests more with Finland than the current Swedish government. If Andersson’s government says no, it is the end of that government.

  14. This is bullshit. I instantly went from near support of her and her party back to the center-right camp. With Russia, you are either strong and determined, or a possible target. There is no “deescalation” as far as strength goes.
