More than 150,000 Romanians received a COVID-19 vaccine in 24 hours breaking a new record. Romania could hit 70% vaccination target by end of year.

  1. There are 2 reasons for this:

    1. The political class has finally decided to do something and impose some restrictions after having >500 deaths/day.
    2. People are starting to fear covid way more than the vaccine (it only took the total collapse of the health-care system).

It’s sad that it had to get to this point for people to start getting vaccinated. This is not a win; it’s just some breathing room ’till the next set of problems start arising.

  2. I was in Romania recently and it was really surprising how many people resisted not only the vaccine but also the restrictions put in place to prevent infections.

I know it’s only anecdotal evidence, but I don’t think they’ll be reaching 70% without some serious changes.

  3. We will never reach 70% until the end of the year. Some people get the shot now out of fear, but most because of the new restrictions(in malls, theaters, restaurants public buildings you need proof that you get the jab or a negative test in order to enter).

The problem is that, knowing my country, the restrictions will not be enforced. We are masters at evading the law. When people will see that you can go without a pass, the vaccination rate will go down. Romanians did not suddenly became aware that we are in grave danger and that COVID is actually not only a flu.

I a couple of days the numbers for the first dose will again be at 10-15.000/day.

Also, I believe that the 70% is still calculated using the 19 million inhabitants from the last census. We are now way more less. We do not know the number of people, but we probably are around 16-17 millions.
