The transitional government in Syria has declared Christmas a public holiday

1. Ah, u/polymute posting straight disinformation now. Christmas has always been a public holiday in Syria, due to its large Christian population. Syria is home to the oldest Christian church (physical building) in the world. Syria has two public holidays for Easter, one for the Gregorian calendar and one for the Julian calendar. 

   Here’s the real story –

   >A video shared on social media showed a group of armed and masked men setting fire to a Christmas tree in the square of Al-Suqaylabiyah, where the Christian population is predominantly located. In a statement from the transitional government, it was mentioned that ‘foreign fighters’ were responsible for the arson, and these individuals have been detained, with the tree set to be repaired quickly. Following the incident, thousands of protesters took to the streets across the country, demanding that the new government protect religious minorities.

2. Very good sign in my opinion, from multiple perspectives. First of all Syria will need a government tolerant of the diverse cultures that inhabit the country and second of all i hope that the new government can improve ties with the European Union.
