Daniel Wiffen enjoyed a stellar 2024. Photo: David Fitzgerald/Sportsfile

Daniel Wiffen takes a white sock from his bedside locker at home in Loughborough and pulls out his Olympic gold medal from inside it.

He gets another white sock and out pops his Olympic bronze medal. This kind of show-and-tell is rarer than you’d imagine; Wiffen reckons it’s a month since he last looked at his Olympic medals besides when he needs to take them to events with him. The purpose of this de-socking is to show the Irish Independent over Zoom how his gold medal hasn’t faded in colour since the Paris Games, while his bronze medal has discoloured in parts.
