26th December 2024 – (Oslo) Train operations across Norway were halted on Christmas Day after a communication failure occurred between trains and the traffic control centre, disrupting travel plans for tens of thousands returning home from festive celebrations.
The issue began at 8am (0700 GMT) on Wednesday, prompting immediate concern as many passengers found themselves stranded. Bane Nor, the state-owned company responsible for the country’s rail infrastructure, reported that the problem had been identified and resolved, enabling a gradual resumption of train services by 9pm (2000 GMT).
In a statement on its website, Bane Nor confirmed that the error had been isolated, allowing for a safe restart of operations. However, the company cautioned passengers to expect delays and cancellations as the system stabilises.
“We deeply regret the inconvenience caused to our passengers on a day when many were travelling to reunite with family,” Bane Nor expressed, noting that additional work would continue to fully address the underlying technical fault.
