I have these small , fruit flies like insects all around the windows of my apartment. Which type of insects are these and are they common in winter in Germany? Are there any home remedies to remove them? Are they attracted by big houseplants?

  1. Trauermücken. They live in the soil of house plants. There nematodes you can order online that help somewhat reliably

  2. Fungus gnats and they’re common pretty much everywhere. A plant/the soil is likely what brought them in. They die if you let your plants dry out fully. If you don’t want to risk that I recommend treating them with nematodes.

  3. Might be “trauermücken” which like to live in the soil of houseplants.

I’ve had the best success at combating them using nematodes. They can be bought, added to water, and will then kill off the fly larva.

  4. Probably fungus gnats (Trauermücken). Got an infestation of them a while back. They love damp earth, a couple of my house plants were full of them. Take a look at yours. If it’s real bad, you’ll easily see a bunch of them crawling around in and out of the pot and flying around that plant.

First thing to do would be to not water that plant (so much). Let it dry. The wetter it gets, the more they will multiply. Also get yellow stickers to place in the pots to catch them. If that’s not enough, there are some other remedies you can try, natural or chemical. Some said tea tree oil can help, haven’t tried that though.

  5. Agree with the diagnoses. The nematodes are super effective, I get mine from Amazon for a couple of euro.

  6. You can also get yellow sticky sheets from dm which will attract them and help a lot to reduce the amount of it.

  7. Probably Trauermücken, put a layer of sand on your potted plants and hang up a few yellow traps. Should get rid of em in a few weeks.

  8. These are fungus gnats. They love moist soil and will infest your houseplants. I would recommend you completely repot your plants. Put nematodes in your newly potted soil to prevent them again (sometimes big bags of soil comes pre-infected with them). I also recommend your bottom water your plant. Only water after your soil is almost completely dry.

  9. this may seem like an odd question but do they look triangular shaped when alive?

  10. Did you recently repot your plants or brought in some plants from outside? That’s how they usually get in. To get rid of them, put up yellow stickers. You can also spray some bug spray around.

To prevent another outbreak later, you can cover the soil in your plant pots with a layer of bird sand. It should be available at your local dm/Rossmann. After that, you have to water your plants from below for several by soaking the pot in water.

If the sand isn’t an option, you can instead buy poison at a Baumarkt with a garden center.
