Dear team,

First of all, thank you very much for your insightful input and I hope you made it through the holidays safely. I have not let go of the topic and have contacted a relative. She was able to send me photos of his medals/badges. Maybe the picture will be clearer that way.
So far: Rank: Captain; either Air Force or Artillery (Army)…

  1. Patrząc po ilości to chyba dowodził inwazją na Czechosłowację xD

  2. Hard to say, but probably he was communist political officer.

  3. Pretty standard set of medals. The highest is the one in the top right Polonia Restituta. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_Polonia_Restituta](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_Polonia_Restituta)

Then there are the three Crosses of Merit (top row) Bronze, Silver, Gold. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross_of_Merit_(Poland)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross_of_Merit_(Poland))

The middle row is for service in the armed forces (gold means 25 years): [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medal_of_the_Armed_Forces_in_the_Service_of_the_Fatherland](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medal_of_the_Armed_Forces_in_the_Service_of_the_Fatherland)

The bottom one is for Merit for National Defense:

The rest are a random assortment of orders, for Polish Red Cross, 40 years of Polish People’s Republic etc. quite common.

  4. pff, only Polonia Restituta and no White Eagle? Not even a Virtuti Militari? what a pleb (/s)

  5. Relatively medium/low high rank firefighter and scout, my dad says. Was in polish military in the 70s.

  6. Nothing special. Just served long enough to gather those.
To nie są medale za zasługi ale okolicznościowe, za wysługę lat i takie tam. Kilka z nich maja moi rodzice, którzy całe życie pracowali jako pracownicy naukowi na różnych uczelniach i uniwersytetach.

  7. First photo

Top Row Corner: Order of Polonia Restituta (Class V – Knight Cross)
Top Row: Golden, Silver, Bronze Merit Cross
Middle Row: Golden, Silver, Bronze Armed Forces in the Service of the Fatherland (for longtime Military Service)
Bottom Row: Golden, Silver, Bronze Medal for merit to the nations defenses

    Second Photo

From Left to Right : Cross for Merit to the ZHP (Polish Scout Organization) , 40 Year Anniversary of the Polish People’s Republic Medal, Bronze Medal for Merit in Firefighting, Class IV Polish Red Cross Medal (Officially referred to as a ” Badge “)

    Third Photo

From Left to Right : Golden Medal for Merit to LOK (Pro-Defense Organization), seems like another 40 year anniversary medal, bronze ” badge ” for merit in protecting the public order and a Silver Medal for Merit to LOK

  8. I am missing the verb here
    What did your grandfather what?

  9. PRL and eagle without a crown…. your grandfather was a
    “trep” in Soviet influenced army.

    Sorry!

  10. Thanks everyone whose posted on here. Some great comments as my grandad had similar medals. But he’s got a few more so might post in here to see if anyone has any further comments to add :))

  11. One of them is a Red Cross medal, so probably a medic of some kind or something along those lines

  12. When I was a child we had a full drawer of presentation/display boxes of medals at home. I remember playing with it one time, like stacking those boxes on top of each other, my Mom saying ‘you better do not talk about it with your mates’. My parents were scientists and were awarded those medals for achievements for the communists government in PL. My mom was also head of Solidarity in our neck of woods in the 90s. (Stuff my parents came up with during comunism would guarantee me being born to millions if they would be in USA). Anyway, fun when they argue who got more ppm in what they were researching in their lab.
