Yeah… wtf even was that? Boring episode, depressing storyline. Unsure why they chose *that* as their Christmas reunion special?
Christmas special! Oh you were looking forward to it? Btw Pete has cancer, Sue’s having a mental breakdown, Jane is STILL HERE, no Auntie Angela, Jake looks like the walking dead and his marriage is falling apart, Karen has quit her job and Ben is stuck on a bus replacement replacement service with two randos. Nice and cheery for us all. Merry Christmas!
You just lost the game
Wonder how many times something like “Shit we can’t write the kids to be the same as when they were kids… what do we do now?” Was said in the writing room.
How did no-one read the script and say, hey guys maybe we should write something not shite.
Well that was shit
I liked it. It was a bit sad and a bit depressing, but that’s life, innit? Outnumbered was always at its best when it was a slice of life, just a normal-ish day. I certainly wouldn’t be opposed to more specials down the line.
It was written like it was the intro for a new series, I had more questions after watching it then I did before… What happens with Pete? Does Ben go away/ move back in? Does Jane go? What happens with the neighbours?
I kept waiting for something to happen and nothing ever did
Do yourself a favour and go and watch the kids reacting to the old Children in Need specials on YouTube. That was really cheering. They all seemed to have a great time filming the show and are still good friends now.
I thought it was hilarious.
“Well I’ve got cancer so I get to shower first”
And
“A hyena with early signs of arthritis”
Both cracked me up. The dry humour is exactly what I wanted on Boxing Day after 2 days with the family
Felt like half a story tbh.
Ironically enough, Gavin and Stacey was about the only bit of Christmas telly I enjoyed this year. Maybe we were just spoiled last night and this one brought us right back down to earth.

Stop being miserable, it was perfectly fine.
Exactly what you would expect to happen, happened. It could have been over in 10 minutes
I have always loved Outnumbered and even the episode tonight did get a few laughs out of me here and there. Just felt a bit flat though, and quite depressing. Still, that old episode where Ben says “cancer” a lot when Pete needs a test is gonna feel slightly haunting to rewatch
How exactly was it supposed to work considering all the kids have grown up? The kids being young and asking silly and awkward questions is what made it work.
Xmas special are always shite
The whole point of Outnumbered was that it used to find humour in the smallest, most mundane everyday things.
So what on earth was that cancer storyline doing there?
Way too dark for a 45 minute Christmas Special/ One Off Ten Year Reunion of a very light hearted comedy show.
I thought Karen was great though – definitely the funniest out of the kids. I seem to remember that being the case in the earlier series too.
Having never watched it I thought I’d give it a try. Left honestly wondering how this ever made it past a pilot episode never mind multiple series
I was disappointed with the Gavin and Stacey Christmas special too to be fair.
I thought this post was about Gavin & Stacey and I was so confused with all the names!
Question for the people moaning about this – did you actually *watch* the original series? Did you actually *understand* it, or was it just “some little kids say silly things”?
Not watched it, but I have to say that the little girl in Outnumbered is the most underrated character in UK TV history.
I’m glad someone said it.
For every ounce of perfection the G&S special delivered, the outnumbered delivered disappointment in equal measure. It’s one of my wife’s favourite shows and when we got to the end she just looked at me and said “Sorry for making you watch that…it was utter drivel.”
Had no idea it was on
I enjoyed it. It was different to the original series and that’s the entire point. The parents are growing older, the children have grown up and living their own lives. And they are still trying to bumble along as best they can. The children felt like rounded adults and not what I feared – playing sitcom versions of their younger selves like My Family. Outnumbered always had deep emotional bits so not sure why everyone is dissing the cancer storyline – it’s very deliberately pitched as serious but not catastrophic.
I’d say it was a 5/10. It just felt like there was no personality in it. None of the kids were really distinguishable from each other. They arrived, got told the news and then acted on their best behavior for the rest of the episode until the last scene. And the one with the most personality Ben didn’t even turn up until last.
We really didn’t need Jane and then to introduce a new character so late in the episode. It was all too squashed in. It really feels like they were wanting to twat it as the start of a new series but that just made it suffer. Like Amazing Spiderman 2 when they tried to fit in so much to start a universe of films that AS2 ended up falling flat.
It did have some funny jokes from Karen and Pete but other that that is wasn’t funny. The stuff with Jake is obviously to show him turning into his parents but then they almost didn’t go into it too much because Pete and Sue weren’t actually relaxed at the moment to contrast with that.

I’m halfway through on catchup, does anything actually happen at any point?

I’m going a bit harsher and channeling Will
