Christmas in Latvia was an autumnal affair, with cloudy skies, occasional drizzle, and melting snow, and similar conditions are expected to continue until the New Year.
In the coming days, under the influence of the anticyclone, the weather will remain calm, with grey days, little precipitation, and temperatures above freezing both nights and days.
In the last days of December, atmospheric pressure will drop and cyclonic influences will intensify, leading to a noticeable increase in winds. In addition, several precipitation zones will cross Latvia.
Rain and showers are expected in places on Friday and in many places on Saturday. The wind will blow gently to moderately from the west. Fog will form in some areas during the night and during the day. Air temperatures will be in the +2 C to +7 C range.
On Sunday, the weather will start to deteriorate further. It will rain at times and, as the atmospheric pressure changes more rapidly, south-westerly, westerly winds will pick up, gusting up to 15-16 meters per second (m/s) along the coast. Air temperatures will remain similar to normal.
During the first half of the new week, including the New Year, precipitation will intensify and snow will fall in places, but there will be no persistent snow cover.
Winds will continue to pick up and gusts could even exceed 25 m/s near the coast on New Year’s Day, January 1.
Temperatures will remain above freezing and fairly stable both nights and days.
