  1. And the ones that were, left the assembly because they weren’t Christian

  2. “he’s got the whole world in his hands”

no clue what the song was about but every year we had to sing it during easter

  3. I’d just sit there quietly. No-one ever said anything about it.

Also did the same when it came to them getting us to take part in prayer.

  4. Some absolute bangers though. Bind us together lord, seek ye first the kingdom of God, and walk in the light are stone cold classics.

  5. Mine was less then that in the early 10s out of 126 kids only 4 were religious and all of their parents were teachers, like can we just scrap coe schools now

  6. I used to sarcastically shout and sing out of tune , then get told to sit outside

  7. I think the fact this religion was drilled into us all so hard that it had the opposite effect

  8. If I had a hammer
    I’d hammer in the morning
    I’d hammer in the evening
    All over this land
    I’d hammer out danger
    I’d hammer out a warning
    I’d hammer out love between
    My brothers and my sisters
    Aaaaaaaaall over this land.

    Straight up banger.

  9. I never got why we had to do them to begin with. Also, im sure not all of them were religious. Down by the riverside was a classic for me

  10. Give me oil in my lamp, keep me burning
, Give me oil in my lamp, I pray
, Give me oil in my lamp, keep me burning,
Keep me burning ’til the break of day 🎵

    Was a banger though

  11. 🎶 Autumn days when the grass is jewelled and the silk inside a chestnut shell, jet planes meeting in the air to be refuelled…🎵

Just looked up the rest of the words (none of which I remembered) and they really did make us sing some bloody weird songs back then.

We had a teacher called Mrs Rogers who played the piano like it had offended her and all of her ancestors

  12. By P2 I was arguing with the head teacher that since I didn’t believe in any gods I wouldn’t take part In the songs or prayers, she would be shouting in my face about how everyone had to take part but could never give me a reason why, they eventually gave up trying to force the cult on me

  13. Let’s be real – the average British class room IS religious.

  14. Did the same in India cause my school was run by Church of England Missionaries.

Now in UK learning to pray Salat and the tenets of Islam.

    Finally I am atheist.

  15. We were always jealous of the 2 Jehovah Witness kids who could skip all the boring CoE assemblies. 😄

  16. Many schools are on land owned by the local church, donated many years ago. The church allows the school free use of the land in return for the school including its teachings.
These days, those teachings have reduced to very minimal topics / hymns etc.

Look at the equivalent setup of other religions and you’ll see the religious doctrine surpassing everything, including not teaching many branches of science which conflict with the texts.
