Every country should have sufficient capacity to defend themselves to a meaningful degree.
I would say that a close arrangement with the U.K. would be the best arrangement moving forwards. Some kind of shared approach where Ireland has its own equipment and runs it but potentially with direct assistance from the U.K. as well as the U.K. providing certain higher level capabilities that would be too expensive for Ireland.
Okay what can they get that can reach the altitudes that Russian Air Force Tu-95 Bear-H and Tu-160 Blackjacks can fly at
As the last Irish Air Force fighter was the Supermarine Seafire LF.3
Ireland seem to be quite happy to let the UK defend their airspace. They dont have to spend anything while simultaneously moaning and complaining about the UK, its the best of both worlds for them.
Isn’t the UK really protecting their own ass/borders that are in close proximity to Ireland.
Are the weapons manufacturers behind this.
If Russia wanted to attack Ireland with hardware,Ireland will certainly not match it in the field.Anyway, the modern battleground is cyber,blackmail/leverage etc.Don’t they have Kompromat on Boris.
If Ireland is wants the capability to protect its own airspace I have no qualms. I assume we’d both let each other know if something was coming from our end
Absolutely agree. Instead of leeching off of the UK taxpayer they should pay for their own defence arrangements.
Well they should at least get the radars so they can see what is going on.
They should ask France to do it. They are short 1 large military contract and they can bond over blaming the uk for everything
Perhaps France could do it for them instead?
The Russians could be good for Shannon if we could get them landing there to refuel .
Why would we spend millions on planes to chase them away ?
As an Irish citizen I find this embarrassing. We should definitely have the ability to defend our own territory. We rely too much on the fact that we are officially neutral and hope we’re not seen as a viable target.
Unfortunately there is no appetite politically or amongst the general population to change this.
What a bunch of hateful shite people have posted here. (both ways but i’m particularly disgraced by at least 2 ‘irish’ users’)
The Air defence Britain provides Ireland is mutually benefical, it protects both of our interests and ensures cooperation. This is just a simple fact.
Ireland has little to no interest in having an air force to patrol it’s island as of yet, and Britain is willing to provide it to bolster it’s own defense, while it might be true that Ireland has pretty much zero enemies that won’t always be the case and a weak link in a chain is the one that will be exploited, it is a win-win for both sides to protect the British Isles from outside threats that either exist now or may exist in the future.
Regardless of what the Irish gov / Military does – Irish airspace will always be fair game for us to enter and control in our own interests.
I dont want to be the cynical one here but against who is Ireland defending its airspace exactly? The next non nato country is thousands of km away and wo0uld have to cross several other nato/EU members national air spaces.
Appart from somebody sending a bomber or aircraft carrier to purposefully bomb Ireland I dont really see a big threat to irish air space apart from a terrorist plane hijacking maybe.
Also wouldnt a few modern AA systems basically cover irish air space entirely anyway. the island isnt that big after all.
Ok, but why? Unless something really terrible happens, we will always defend Ireland. We may disagree on many things, but ultimately we are both from the British Isles, and we are both free, democratic nations with a similar culture.
If Ireland wanted their own air defence i’d say they should be more than welcome. But the article seems pretty clear that Ireland doesn’t, and i’m doubting a Brit hating reddit user is going to change their minds.
Why not introduce an EU air policing mission?

Ireland should probably invest in air defence to be ready to help our good friends in the Baltics against their revanchist “global russia” neighbours. The EU showed up to defend Ireland recently, and good countries deserve good company. But no Russian ever did anything bad to Ireland, so why plan your defences to a non existent threat.
As far as defending Ireland, the reality unfortunately is, the only threat to the well being of Irish citizens has always been, and as brexit has shown remains, the UK. Priti Patel threatening to blockade Ireland or Boris Johnson happy to lie to loyalists while playing games with the Good Friday Agreement. Yes, the UK deploying paratroopers to massacre Irish civilians or providing material support to terrorist attacks North and South is hopefully in the past. But doesn’t change who Ireland’s biggest threat is. And I think the comments here clearly show just how much hate remains in Britain for Ireland.
We can all stick our heads in the sand and pretend Tory Britain is some new/less right wing imperialist nation that has learned from its past, but the reality of ‘make britain great again’ brexit shows the shit show it remains. There is not a single petty tyrant or jumped up commie that has verbally attacked Ireland as much in the past 5 years. Support for troops that committed war crimes remains at an all time high, very worrying if you were on the recieving end of those war crimes in the recent past. What use would any general be if they ignored these realities. The line from verbal to real attacks is not something to ignore.
But the UK is also the most warmongering nation on the planet. No Brit remembers the last time they weren’t at war. Or cares. Few countries invest so heavily in weapons relative to their size. No doubt the hordes will be angry at reading that, but they’ll struggle to dispute it as factual and will thus resort to personal attacks.
So a small country defending itself from its main threat adversary isn’t going to work. Hence, better to use them for the only thing they’re actually any good at and focus on diplomacy. So letting Britain and Russia play dick measuring contests seems like clever strategy, especially if it keeps right wingers in both countries appeased/distracted. Given the success of deploying the US and EU to protect the Good Friday Agreement I’d say it’s a winning strategy.
So yeah. Let’s invest in an EU army and be there to defend western values such as the rule of law from whichever of the imperialistic nations is having a right wing brainfart at either end of Europe.
You’re a sick country UK. You can downvote/brigade/get angry all you want. It doesn’t change you’re a sick country right now. Pointing at foreigners, Irish or not, isn’t going to change that.
Look at the headline, “end reliance on uk for air defence”.
Now tell me who the fuck is threatening Ireland and what airspace defence agreement exists (link to governing documents please) between britain and Ireland. Rnli cooperation doesn’t count as it’s governed by maritime laws which include frence and Spain too.

There should just be joint European defence.
God I love the belittling attitude on this sub.
