***From The Times:***
South Korean MPs have voted to impeach the country’s acting president, less than a fortnight after he took over the position from his predecessor who was impeached after declaring martial law.
Out of the 300-member parliament, 192 voted to impeach Han Duck-soo after he refused to immediately appoint justices to fill vacancies at the Constitutional Court. The court is adjudicating the impeachment trial of the president, Yoon Suk-yeol, who had imposed martial law on December 3 before being forced to abandon his plan.
The impeachments of the country’s top two officials is likely to worsen South Korea’s political turmoil, deepen its economic uncertainty and tarnish its international image.

This is the hidden danger the reactionary right wing pose even to democracies we consider “safe” or “uncompromised”. All it takes is a successful declaration of martial law to turn a democracy into an anocracy. Dissent is no longer part of the culture in “comfortable” democracies and honestly, I think we’re going to see more shock declarations like South Korea’s over the next few years.
