A year ago, Jacques Delors, one of the great builders of our Union, passed away. “The European Union must be a federal union with a common currency, a tightly co-ordinated economic policy and a foreign policy capable of common diplomatic and military action”

  1. His dream lives on, for prosperity, freedom, and European security.

  2. Seems like the current EU is very far from the vision he had. Pretty much zero federal power, economic policies are all over the place, and don’t even get started on foreign policy or “being capable of military action”. The common currency seems to be the only thing realized from his vision.

  3. I dont agree with his goals but Ill pray for his soul and for his family for their loss

  4. He was French. Unlike him, most French people don’t want a federation, because like the British, they still fantasise about their lost Empire. They don’t want to be equals in Europe, they want to rule it.

  5. Nobody intends to make the EU a federal nation state, just like nobody is intending to build a wall. No merit and intention whatsoever if you ask if anyone is for EU federalism. The next day, on the same sub, it’s suddenly unavoidable if you want to safeguard at least a tiny bit of prosperity.

  6. Then Jacques was a true believer of utopia, especially when it comes to economic policy.

How can this be achieved when 2 of the biggest players in EU go in 2 opposite directions in one of the most important sectors(if not THE most important in the tech future), which is energy? When the future and existing threats for Europe are understood differently? When there are people in Europe who earn 6x less for the same job? When one country invest in military above 4% of its gdp and others don’t want to spend 2% even though they have signed a certain agreement? Don’t even wanna touch on the issue of national pride and nationalism which has incredibly long roots.

All the beautiful words lose their meaning when we get on the ground and start discussing the real world issues

  7. Federal law in European Union is same as Soviet Union. Ideology is the problem so with all of federal ideology is like a dictatorship. Countries, smaller countries who had energy independence – does not have independence as a nation. Lithuania is an example.

  8. And the more time goes by the more it feels necessary to do.

  9. This guy ruined the France’s left. a federal government can’t work in a continent with dozens of languages, different histories, cultures, electoral systems
