Nobody asked for this. AI is Shattering Hope of a Net Zero Future.

  1. There hasn’t been hope for a net zero future in 20 years.

    This sub feels like parody

  2. BOYCOTT AI.
I’m thinking AI is going to destroy a lot of companies that use it. We have HATED Automated Phone systems for decades. WHY WOULD AI BE ANY DIFFERENT.
Everywhere I’ve seen it being used it made a website or company worse.
Google search results, used to be amazing. Now they’re 100 times worse, not even what I asked for. Just gets worse and worse.

  3. Not just AI, Crypto too-two of the most asinine human inventions that no one asked for and no one needs.

  4. Gemini, burn down the Amazon to make me a picture of Garfield wearing saggy pants, sun glasses and a too long t-shirt that says “Muy Feo Mondays” please.

  5. The only chance we have of surviving the climate crisis and preserving our ecosystem is with the help of AI. Just look at all the top climate academic papers from the past year – most use AI.

  6. AI is the latest excuse to roll back targets, if it wasn’t for AI it’d be military spending or something else under the purview of a Cold War pissing contest (we’re getting all of the above).

Unless there is massive, directed state intervention in the economy, we’re going to be lucky if we can keep warming under 2.5C. Unfettered capitalism is the entire problem.

That being said, Mexie has a lot of good points here.

  7. Well, if they do create AGI that would fix our climate pretty fast

  8. AI costs per task are declining dramatically – like 200x over the last 2~ years. But it’s so in-demand, the total is rising rapidly.

That said, if we compare those tasks to others doing them, it’s probably still a win.

  9. No one asks for any new technology, but you know what? That never stops people from embracing it when it becomes available, and then worrying about the repercussions only when it’s too late.

One of the funniest things I’ve seen recently was a climate scientist, who used AI to generate a graphic about climate change, defend it in the face of being challenged by one of her followers, an artist. She said it was “only this once” and that she used the image over and over, which somehow made it okay. Her follower told her that she should have hired an artist to create the picture, especially since the AI is based on stealing everyone else’s work.

Every time I see a climate scientist make a post about how AI is driving a huge demand for energy (and increased emissions), there are always a number of people who show up and post AI-generated pics in response with comments like, “Yeah, but aren’t pics like this COOOOOL?”

And yeah, this is why we’re boned. Few can grasp that our individual contributions add up to an overwhelming whole, and if even a climate scientist can rationalize why it’s okay to do something harmful, the average person will do the same.

  10. Unlike crypto, AI might solve all of our climate problems with technological innovations — or kill us… But if we’re doomed anyway, why not build a digital god to hopefully fix what human obviously can’t?

  11. I think billionaires are the explanation for the Fermi paradox. If any alien civilizations has something equivalent to billionaires, they don’t go Star Trek. They go extinct or back to their own stone age.

  12. Hopefully once we hit AGI in the next few years, which will quickly lead to super intelligence, our alien god computer will come up with a solution that will solve the climate crisis. At this point it seems its our only hope, even if its a large climate cost in the short term.

  13. Anything to take the blame away from fossil fuel executives impeding a change to renewables.

  14. Don’t AI require massive servers somewhere which would be easily destroyed?
