Incredible work by ODTI, the transplant teams and above all, the families.
Those people who at their moment of greatest loss, choose to help others and stave of other families grief even if only for a short while.
I’ve been through the donation process twice.
The 1st time in 2007 was very ad hoc with almost no support for the family, no real counselling and very much left to your family’s own devices.
The 2nd was in 2023, and the difference was huge. The ODTI team have really stepped up. From appointing a dedicated coordinator to liaise with family and even to do little things such as taking hand prints and locks of hair, to providing counselling afterwards.
The current logistical limit of the transplant is around 300-330 donors per year.
It is heartening to see that ODTI are approaching that limit.
To those families that choose to gift life and time to others in their darkest moments?
I wish them all comfort in their grief.
263 lives changed in a year, thanks to some very brave families…
I hope they all are healthy, safe and well x
As a person just about to start dialysis. This is great news for the future!
I received one of these amazing gifts in September, and it truly is life changing and the most incredible feeling im still trying to process. I’m forever grateful to my donor and their family 🙏
If you have never considered becoming a donor, I urge you to please think about it and have the conversation with your family.
I carry an organ donor card but refuse to sign it, I want someone to have the use of it after I die! In all seriousness it’s good their bringing in donor by default in the future soon.
